INT. POLICE STATION – NIGHT
Sergeant Srinivas blows smoke at Jamal // screen text:Mumbai, 2006 // Jamal Malik is one question away from winning 20million rupees. How did he do it? // Srinivas punches him on the face: Name?
FADE IN to F/F: bank notes
INT. TV STUDIO – EVENING
Prem Kumar [O.C.] welcomes the audience in English and Hindi to 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?'
F/F: a hand scatters bank notes
Studio lights briefly illuminate Prem and fade to backlighting only: Are you ready?
F/F: H/A bath being filled with money
Prem introduces Jamal; control room: banks of screens, blue light
INT. POLICE STATION – NIGHT
Srinivas hits Jamal who manages to say his name
INT. TV STUDIO – EVENING
Jamal in the studio; the TV camera; So, Jamal, tell me something about yourself.
INT. POLICE STATION – NIGHT
Jamal's head is pushed into a bucket of water and pulled out. // A phone-basher.
INT. TV STUDIO – EVENING
Jamal is a chai-wallah. Prem announces the start. Jamal looks to the side and sees
F/B: H/A a very beautiful girl in a yellow dress (Latika) on a railway station
INT. POLICE STATION – DAY
Jamal is given electric shocks but simply insists he knew the answers.
EXT. JUHU SLUM, MUMBAI – DAY
boys playing cricket; security officers on motor bikes chase them away and through the slum
INT. SCHOOLROOM – DAY
The children are reading The Three Musketeers. The teacher hits Jamal over the head with it, calling him 'Athos'.
INT. POLICE STATION – DAY
Jamal is dressed and sitting at a desk. The Inspector tells Jamal to talk, and switches on the video.
CLOSE on thescreen with Jamal ready to answer the first question.
INT. TV STUDIO – EVENING
Prem mocks Jamal a bit, explains the rules // the control room: Who was the star in the 1973 hit film 'Zanjeer'?
INT. OUTHOUSE – DAY
Jamal jumps into the sewage to get his autograph. Salim sells Jamal's autograph

Jamal watches himself on TV win 1000 rupees. The next question comes from the TV set.
[O.C.] A picture of three lions is seen in the national emblem of India. What is written underneath it? //
TV screen view – what the TV viewer sees. A: The truth alone triumphs. etc. Jamal asks the audience.
The Inspector: My five-year-old daughter can answer that question, but you couldn't.
INT. TV STUDIO – EVENING
Jamal has won 4,000 rupees. Q: In depictions of God Rama, he is famously holding what in his right hand?
EXT. RAILWAY LINE, JUHU – DAY
Jamal and Salim see their mother murdered; they see a small boy dressed as the god Rama
