2016-2017 Parent Involvement Policy
Part IGeneral Expectations
Jack Yates Senior High School adopts this Parent Involvement Policy in order to implement the following statutory requirements of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA):
- Develop with parents and distribute to parents of participating children, a Parental Involvement Policy that the school and parents of participating children agree on.
- Notify parents about the Parental involvement Policy in an understandable and uniform format and to the extent practical, will distribute this policy to parents in a language the parents can understand.
- Make the Involvement Policy available to the local community.
- Periodically update the Parental Involvement Policy to meet the changing needs of parent and the school.
- Adopt the school-parent compact as a component of its Parental Involvement Policy.
- Be governed by the following statutory definition of parent a involvement, and will carry out programs, activities and procedures in accordance with this definition:
- Parent involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two way and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including and ensuring-
- Parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning;
- Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their Child’s education at school;
- That parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child;
- The carrying out of other activities, such as those described in section 1118 of the ESEA.
Part IIImplementation of Required School Parental Involvement Policy Components
Note: The School Parental Involvement Policy shall include a description of how the school will implement or accomplish each of the following components (Section 1118, ESEA)
- Jack Yates Senior High School will invite parents to meetings to review and make suggestions in an effort to involve parents in the dual development and review of its school parental involvement policy under section 1118 of the ESEA.
- Jack Yates Senior High School will take the following actions to involve parents in the process of school review and improvement under Title 1 Part A of ESEA
- The School Parental Involvement Policy will be distributed to parents a Title I parent meetings.
- Invite parent to participate in Shard Decision Making Committee (SDMC) Meetings
- Provide information on State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exams, College Admissions, NCAA Eligibility Promotion Standards, SAT/ACT preparation and exams and the significance of class rank.
- Provide support to parents in transitioning to college and career choices
- Jack Yates Senior High School will hold five Title 1 meetings to inform parents of the schools participation in Title 1 Programs. The school will convene the meeting at a time convenient for parents.
- The Annual Title 1 Meeting will be held during Open House
- Jack Yates Senior High School will provide parents of participating children information in a timely manner about Title I, Part A Programs that includes a description and explanation of the school’s curriculum, the forms of academic assessment used to measure a child’s progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.
- Our school communicates consistently with parents and guardians on the state curriculum, assessment expectations and strategies used to enhance student’s academic success. This is achieved through a variety of methods such as the Student Code of Conduct, the Power Up HUB, Connect Ed Message System, Parent and Student Connect, Parent and Guardian Conferences, the School Marquee and Assembly Meetings with Grade Level Deans and Title 1 Parent Meetings.
- Jack Yates Senior High School will provide opportunities for regular meetings at flexible times for parents to formulate suggestions and to participate in decisions about the education of their children. The school will respond to any such suggestions as soon as possible.
- Parent Conferences
- Jack Yates Senior High School will provide each parent an individual student report about the performance of their child on the state assessment in math and language arts by:
- STAAR Results
- Phone Message System to inform that results are available
- Jack Yates Senior High School will take the following actions to provide each parent timely notice when their child has been taught for four (4) or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified.
- There will be a Notification of Highly Qualified (HQ) letter sent home with students
- There will be a phone message in reference to the HQ letter being sent home
- Jack Yates Senior High School will provide assistance to parents of children served by the school information on the topics below:
- The STAAR academic content standards
- The STAAR student academic achievement standards
- The State and Local academic assessment including alternate assessments
- The requirements of Title I Part A
- How to monitor your child’s academic progress
- How to work with your child’s educators
- Jack Yates Senior High School will provide materials and training to help parent work with their children in the areas of improving student achievement and a variety of topics provided by HSD Parent Engagement Program.
- Jack Yates Senior High School will take the following actions to ensure that information related to the school and parent-programs, meetings, and other activities are sent to parents of participating children in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon request, and in a language the parents can understand:
- All written communication sent home will be concise and compact. Our school relies heavily on oral communication in English and Spanish to ensure all information related to our school is understandable. A translator is available when necessary
