Repertoire Requirements for the Bachelor/Masters of Music in Performance (Flute)

During the four yeas of study at SDSU, the student should master repertoire chosen from all categories in the representative list below. The student should become familiar with all repertoire listed, in addition to the in-depth study of particular works.

Scales (must be memorized)

Major scales in all twelve keys

Harmonic minor scales in all twelve keys

Melodic minor scales in all twelve keys

Chromatic scale

Major and minor arpeggios

(Scales and arpeggios should be practiced slurred, single - double and triple tongued.)

Jazz Majors add Modes - Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeloian, Locrian-all 12 keys Pentatonic scales ( both major & minor) - all 12 keys

Blues Scales - all twelve keys

Diminished Scales

Whole Tone Scales

Bebop Scales - all twelve keys

Bebop Minor - all twelve keys

Permutations of chromatic scale

Must study full extension of chords up to the 13th in all 12 keys

Begin with 7th chords - major 7th / minor 7th / Dominant 7th / Half diminished 7th / Minor #7

Gradually extend by adding on the 9th, the 11th (must #11 on major & dominant), the 13th

Must learn altered dominant 7th chords in all twelve keys (#9, -9, #5, #11) and application of scales - e.g. G7 altered (play Ab diminished scale to add -9, #9, #11,13) or, G7 altered

(play Ab melodic minor scale ascending, to add -9, #9, #11, #5).
