Lakeview Elementary Newsletter

Mr. Scott Taylor, Principal

January 31, 2014

Dear Parents/Guardians:

It certainly has been a very cold winter thus far! We are all trying to get into the school routine but having planned and unplanned days off has been tough for both our staff and students alike. Hopefully the weather will break and we can string together a couple uninterrupted weeks of school. A reminder that were are allowed to use five calamity days before we will be required to make up days once we reach six and above. We shall see what the remaining winter shall bring to us.

We just have finished the first semester of the school year. Half of the school year is now over! We are looking forward to seeing the growth students make this last half of the school year. We will have Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday, February 13th from 3:35-9:35pm. This conference tends to be need based so there are usually fewer conferences than in the fall due to less need, but time will be allocated for any parent that requests a conference. Teachers will organize the time with you directly for this conference.

If you know anyone that will have a Kindergarten student next school year, please let them know that the first date to register is Thursday, February 13th from 4pm-7pm at LES. Details on what is needed to register a student can be found in this newsletter or can be found on our website at and then click on the elementary link.

I spent part of this week in Columbus at the Ohio Education and Technology Conference. I always come away with new ideas that we can use to help our students with applying technology as we know what an important skill it is today and will be in the future for our students. I am thrilled we are able to offer a technology class this year. Mrs. Norton, who has been our technology teacher this year, has done a wonderful job getting our program off the ground this year in her role on a part-time basis. We know that in the near future all our students at Lakeview will be taking their state assessments on a computer. The days of state paper and pencil assessments will soon be coming to an end.

I have been asked recently by parents if anything has changed with the 3rd Grade Reading Guarantee. The answer is no. The same rules that we have talked about since the start of the year still apply. We are offering a before-school reading and math program to help 3rd grade students get an extra boost to be successful at the end of April when the reading assessment will be given and early May when the math assessment will be given. Those invitations have already gone out to students and confirmation slips will come home soon. A third grade student must score a minimum of 392 on one version of the reading assessment or a passing score on another assessment tool to be allowed to go on to 4th grade next year unless an exemption applies. A large percentage of our 3rd grade students meet the criteria after the October assessment.

Thanks for your continued support of LES!

Officer Buhala and Capo

Recently, 3rd grade students read a story called Aero and Officer Mike in their reading books. The story teaches children about the life of a police dog as well as the special bond between police dogs and their handlers. In conjunction with the story, Ray Buhala, a Lakeview parent and K9 officer with the Liberty police department, visited the 3rd grade students with his police dog, Capo. He spoke with the students about Capo’s unique capabilities, answered questions, and then brought in Capo for a demonstration. During the demonstration, Officer Buhala hid an item, and on command, Capo was able to search for and locate the item. In the end, all students got to pet Capo before leaving.

Pre-School Parent Night

Lakeview Elementary recently held a Pre-School Parent Night for parents who will have a Kindergarten student during the 2014/2015 school year. This was the third year the event has been held. The purpose of the night is to talk briefly about Kindergarten but with an emphasis on skills parents and pre-schools can work on while the child is still in pre-school. We had about 40 families attend and had six stations for parents to hear and receive practical skills that can be worked on at home.

We are very fortunate to have a positive working relationship with our local pre-schools. A special thanks to Bazetta Christian Pre-School who provided childcare for families during the event. Our Kindergarten staff, other Lakeview staff members, county pre-school teachers, our local public library, and individuals from a wide array of county agencies helped out with the event. This event is ground breaking in our area as Lakeview is one of the few districts offering an event like this prior to children arriving to Kindergarten.

The first opportunity to register for Kindergarten for the 2014/2015 school year is Thursday, February 13th from 4-7pm at Lakeview Elementary. You can find additional information regarding registration requirements in this newsletter or on our website at
