WHAT ARE WE STUDYING?

Literacy:

Reading Skills – Please review sight words with your child at home and be sure to send your child’s word ring and book in a bag to school everyday. Please take advantage of the many books in Raz Kids, as it offers many books on level for your child to read.

Shared Reading – We have begun Unit 2 in our reading program, Ready Gen. We have read The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton and Four Seasons Make a Yearby Anne Rockwell. We have been discussing the connection between the illustrations and the words. Through close reading we will explore content to understand that there are similarities and differences between then and now. We will also be looking at sequence of events in a story.

Writing – We continue to listen to the sounds we hear in words to write the letters we hear. We will be writing personal narratives in event order and using a time line to help us include details.

Math:

We will begin exploring subtraction. We will understand that subtraction is taking apart and taking from. We will practice the three different structures of subtraction, which are result unknown, change unknown and start unknown. Please help your child at home if you notice them having difficulty, and we will continue working with them in class.

Science:

This month students will be learning about how animals grow and change.

What’s New in Performing Arts?

Mrs. LaMorte: This month students are working on solo/pitch matching, beat competency, identifying and properly playing rhythm instruments, learning 3 songs with motions, learning 2 dances, and continuing to work well with one another.

Mr. Cintula: We are continuing to learn the names of the lines and spaces on the music staff. Students can practice at home using this web site: notename.html. Recently we have been working on listening exercises and identifying the types of instruments we hear in a song.

News/Information/Tips/Reminders

  • We do allow the children to have a healthy snack in the afternoon. Pretzels or a piece of fruit are good options. Please try to keep the snack peanut free.
  • Please send children with boots if there is a threat of snow or snow on the ground, as we do need to walk outside. Continue practicing zippering, buttoning and getting jackets on and off. Whenever possible please put your child’s name in all clothing. Hats, gloves and scarves can easily be lost and are much easier to find if they are labeled with your child’s name.
