Introduction

Following my first newsletter that was published on the 30th of August 2016, a significant amount of work has been done within our Ward and the City. I will try by all means to keep this communication short, by highlighting important issues covered over the period between the last communication and this communication.

I am pleased to advise that the month of September has marked a start to a number of steps in the right direction in terms of addressing service delivery in our Ward. Service delivery issues are being addressed in partnership with a number of the entities of the City of Johannesburg.

I encourage residents to visit browse through recent communication, Residents Associations, useful documents, contact the Councillor, subscribe to the newsletter and other useful information.

I would like take this opportunity to thank residents who have taken their time to write or make calls to my office. These include messages of support and some residents availing themselves to volunteer their time to assist the Councillor, in a number of areas of their interest as contribution to our Ward. I strongly believe that “we are stronger together” in working towards making our Ward a safe environment to live, work and play.

Street lights

There are over 100 street lights that have been fixed by City Power over the month of September following numerous escalations that I have received. This is an important project that contributes towards combating crime, I encourage residents to report these, if not fixed, continue to escalate to me.

Cleanup operations

The following areas have been identified and reported to the respective entities of the City of Johannesburg to conduct cleanup operations:

•Corner President Fouche and CR Swart;

•Under the bridge on the N1 on CR Swart;

•Corner President Fouche and Malibongwe;

•Eskom servitude along Malibongwe and President Fouche; and

•Conservation/greenbelt area along President Fouche.

I am awaiting concrete plans to be finalised where the City has jurisdiction on the above to conduct the cleanup operations.

Illegal dumping

I am pleased to advise that the cleanup operation was conducted in conjunction with the owner of the leased land, JMPD, Balwin Properties and Pikitup at the open piece of land across corner Hornbill and Jacaranda. This piece of land is adjacent to the NI that is situated all the way up to the exit in Malibongwe towards the N1. Due to the size of this land, the cleanup operation will continue into the foreseeable future until it is completed and the piece of land is fenced.

Pockets of illegal dumping across the Ward are being reported and attended to. We will continue to monitor as a project that will take a very long time to address all sites across the Ward.

Water Restrictions

The City of Johannesburg has introduced Level 2 Water Restrictions during the month of September. I encourage the residents to adhere to this. For more information, refer to the following link

Billing Issues

There has been an increase in the number of billing queries and the late delivery of statements to the residents during the month of September. Residents are asked to please exercise patience whilst the City is resolving this issue.

JMPD Operations

I am encouraged by the work that JMPD is doing in our Ward in terms of by-laws enforcements. Of significance amongst others has been a joint operation between JMPD and the Douglasdale SAPS crime prevention. This is where motorists are driving facing on incoming traffic and driving on the shoulder of the road, at corner Mahogany, President Fouche and Olive Roads in Sharonlea. The operation was successful with over 70 citations that were issued for various offenses.

We will continue to drive similar operations across the Ward.

Ward 101 – Crime Indaba

For many years, the Golden Harvest Park, the Old Municipal Nursery and Bunbury Crossing Shopping Centre has been crime hot spots in our Ward.

I am currently working with all the stakeholders in addressing this issue from the RA’s, SAPS, Private Security Companies, Honeydew Sector 1 CPF, Douglasdale Sector 1 CPF, JMPD, JPC, City Parks and Zoo, City of Johannesburg Customer Relationship Urban Management and the Friends of Golden Harvest Park. At the center of this issue are the residents that need to rally behind this initiative.

I urge the residents to diarise the 26th of October 2016 for a Ward 101 Crime Indaba that will take place at 6.30pm. Details will be provided closer to the time in terms of the venue for this meeting. I urge residents to attend this meeting in their numbers so that we get this issue resolved once and for all.

City of Johannesburg Administration

There could be frustrations amongst some of our residents where changes are expected to be in place by this time. Unfortunately, change does not happen overnight, however there are a number of visible changes that residents are witnessing across the City.

The Executive Mayor presented his inaugural speech at the Council Meeting held on Tuesday, 13 September 2016, where he highlighted the priorities for the new administration. For more details, click on this link

The Executive Mayor and the Members of the Mayoral Committee have been hard at work meeting with all senior managers across the entities of the City. In the next few months we shall witness these changes filtering through the different departments and entities of the City.

Until next time.

Sincerely,

Cllr Dalu Cele
