33rd Sunday in ordinary time

Prv 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31/1 Thes 5:1-6/Mt 25:14-30

“For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When people are saying ‘Peace and security’ then sudden disaster comes upon them… ‘For everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.’”

During this month we have celebrated the saints in glory, models for us all, who have attained final glory with God. We have paused to pray for other members of the communion of saints, who ask our prayer for them to achieve the same reward. The scriptures today speak of our opportunities to live our lives in anticipation of the same end.

How many treaties and agreements have been struck to achieve peace, reduction of arms, or drawing new national borders? Yet conflict and war remain. Discussion and debate have not produced a change of turning swords into ploughshares or spears into pruning hooks. Security flees us as volcanoes erupt, tsunamis rush ashore and earthquakes rattle and destroy. We cannot stop working for peace or aiding those who are hurt. Surely we can act, not just react or respond.

We have been blessed with so many gifts. We can speak of these as the talents of the gospel, yet we are slow to create an ongoing pattern of aid for others, or demand an altering of military budgets or the arms race. We seem to relegate the beatitudes of peacemakers and justice seekers to the diplomats engaged in these important roles.

Consider for a moment what you have done with the five, two or one talent the Lord has given you. What have you done, or what are you doing with it? For many, we have buried it. The Lord wants us to be accountable. He expects us to make a difference in our world today.

Our lesson today pits the wise versus the foolish.

October 3rd is our first installment, where the nature of Beauty will be discussed: What is it? How do we know something is beautiful and why? Is God beautiful? Are we? How? We hope you will join us for Theology in the City 2011-2012! Bring friends!

Today’s Gospel speaks to us about “talents.” In Communities of Salt and Light, our Bishops help us apply Jesus’ message to our world right now: “Parishioners are called to use their talents, the resources of our faith, and the opportunities of this democracy to shape a society more respectful of the life, dignity and rights of the human person… The voices of parishioners need to be heard on behalf of vulnerable children—born and unborn—upon behalf of those who suffer discrimination and injustice, on behalf of those without health care or housing, on behalf of our land and water, our communities and neighborhoods. Parishioners need to bring our values and vision into the debates about a changing world and shifting national priorities.” Amen!
