Technology-Connected Lesson Plan
Title: /Solutions to Pollution
Grade Levels: / 1-6Curriculum Areas: / : Science
Measurable Objectives: / : TLW discover the threat to our water ecosystems and determine possible solutions to the problems.
LA Content Standards: / SE-E-A1 understanding that an “ecosystem” is made of living and non-living components;
SE-M-A3 defining the concept of pollutant and describing the effects of various pollutants on ecosystems;
SE-M-A4 understanding that human actions can create risks and consequences in the environment;
Technology Guidelines: / 1. Technology Communication Tools (Communication Foundation Skill)
¨ Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts and other audiences.
2. Technology Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Tools (Problem Solving Foundation Skill)
¨ Students use appropriate technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions.
¨ Students employ technology for real world problem solving.
¨ Students evaluate the technology selected, the process, and the final results through the use of informed decision-making skills.
3. Technology Research Tools (Linking and Generating Knowledge Foundation Skill)
¨ Students use appropriate technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.¨ Students use technology tools to process data and report results.
Technology Connection: / : Inspiration, TV with scan converter, Internet, MS PowerPoint
Procedures: / : Using Inspiration create a class concept web discussing the different water ecosystems (oceans, rivers, lakes, and wetlands) and types of pollution. (include chemicals such as mercury, radioactive wastes, human wastes, beach erosion, destruction of wetlands and more)
: Divide the students into pairs and assign one of the discussed factors for research
: Research using World Book, Gale Group, and search engines such as Google or AskJeeves
: Be sure to have the students answer the following questions:
1. describe the effected water ecosystem
2. describe the type and cause of the pollution
3. who or what are effected by the pollution
4. describe the existing methods of correcting the problem
5. make suggestion of alternative methods of combating the pollution
: Using PowerPoint each pair will create a slide presentation illustrating the results of their research. The first slide should be a title slide including a bibliography and the other slides dedicated to the four questions above. The slide should include pictures and slide animation/transitions.
: Print 2 copies of the PowerPoint- Handout style with six slides to a page.
: Finally the pair will share their PowerPoint with the class. A short question and answer time should follow each presentation
Materials: / : paper/pencil
Assessment: / : Rubric that includes participation, criteria for the project, and the presentation
