Essential Question / Purpose:

Chemical Reactions will produce a new substance. There are always signs of a chemical reaction.

Introduction:

Chemical reactions are everywhere, from the plants that create the oxygen that we breathe to the over-the-counter medicine that we take. This experiment can be the first step to approaching and understanding the complex chemical reactions that surround us everyday.

Research the following 3 terms and add the information to the introductory paragraph (Reactants, Products, Chemical Reactions).

Problem:

How does the temperature of the water affect the time it takes for the rocket to launch?

Materials:

·  Alka-Seltzer Tablets

·  1 Film Canister

·  Water

·  Graduated Cylinder

·  Tape Measure or Meter Stick

·  Stop Watch

Safety:

·  Never taste chemicals (or other substances) used for a lab experiment.

·  Wear safety goggles

·  Keep lids on all containers when not in use.

·  Clean up spills immediately.

·  If any substance gets into your eyes or in a cut on your skin, notify your teacher and follow his/her directions.

·  Wash your hands before and after an experiment.

·  Clean up your lab area and materials after an experiment and return materials to their proper location.

Variables: Make sure to fill in your variables

·  Independent/Test variable:

·  Dependent/Outcome variable:

·  Constant:

·  Control Group: (Which water acts as the standard or comparison?)

Hypothesis: Type your Hypothesis in If/Then formate

If (independent-TESTED-variable), then (dependable-OUTCOME- variable).

Procedure:

1. Fill the room-temperature water to the mark on the film canister.

2. Drop in ½ of Alka-seltzer tablet, put the lid on tight and place the canister, lid side down and step back. (Start the timer the moment you drop the tablet into the water and stop the timer the moment the canister launches)

3. Record this time on your data sheet. Then repeat Steps 1-4 for the remaining two trials.

4. Repeat the same procedures using the hot and cold water. Calculate the average time to launch for each temperature of water and record on your data table.

Data Table:

Trial 1 / Trial 2 / Trial 3 / Average
Cold
Room Temperature
Hot

Graph: Create a graph using your independent and dependent variables. Make sure to put the water by temperature (cold to hot)

Analysis:

In one paragraph analyze your results as shown by your data table. Tell, in words, what your graph or data table shows in numbers. Be sure to discuss trends/patterns in data, but make sure to include the data to support your statements. Discuss the type of relationship shown by your variables. (positive, negative or neutral)

Positive relationship- increase independent variable, increases dependent variable (graph goes up)

Negative relationship- increase independent variable, decreases dependent variable (graph goes down)

Neutral relationship- increase or decrease in independent variable, has no effect on dependent variable

Conclusion:

Use the following questions to guide you in writing at least 2 paragraphs (min.5 sentences each), for the lab report. DO NOT GIVE bulleted answers to the guided questions. Do not just answer the questions in order. You must put them into cohesive sounding paragraphs.

-Was your hypothesis supported or not?

-What science explanation can you give to explain the results of the experiment? (Google how temperature affect the rates of reactions)

-What were possible sources of error? (There are always factors beyond your control that can influence your results. It is very important to identify these factors, before, during and after the experiment.)

-If your hypothesis was not supported, and you had to write a new one, what would it be and how would you test it?

-What are other questions that you may formulate that would help you go on to further research on this type of experiment?

Research:

This experiment had to do with reaction rates. Research what other factors affect reaction rates.

If you wanted to make the reaction happen faster what could you do to the water or Alka-seltzer (other than temperature)?
