FHN senior Justin Mathews-Williams, honored before the December 15 game for reaching 1000 career points, scored 28 points as the Spartans slide reached five games.
Terron Robinson scored the first point of the game on an early free throw. The Knights scored the next six points before Terron dropped a 3-pointer. Kaleb Anderson sank the Spartans second trey and tied the game 10-10 when he converted three straight free throws after being fouled behind the arc. Cameron Dent scored a basket before the Spartans were blanked over the last 1:17 of the first quarter.
The Spartans opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 19-18 lead, getting a basket from LaRenzo Hayes, a 3-pointer from Myles Estrada, and bucket off a steal by Terron Robinson. The Knights responded with a 6-0 run, moving ahead 24-19 before Terron Robinson’s putback. Myles Estrada scored to pull the Spartans within one and FHC took the lead on an Austin Crudup basket coming off an Adam Lewis offensive rebound. Kaleb Anderson sank a free throw after being fouled on a second-chance shot. FHN tied the game on a John Garrelts basket with 5.3 seconds left in the first half.
FHN carried momentum into the second half as Miles Montgomery scored an early basket to put the Knights back ahead. Austin Crudup’s free throw cut the deficit in half. Terron Robinson scored consecutive baskets, the second on a coast-to-coast run, to give the Knights a short-lived 31-30 lead. The lead lasted all of 25 seconds before Miles Montgomery scored to put North back ahead. Kaleb Anderson’s basket cut the Knight lead to 34-33; after the Knights scored four more points, Kaleb sank two free throws. Colin Hepler scored with 58.1 seconds left to keep the Spartans within three before the Knights scored the last five points of the period, including a 3-pointer from Justin Mathews-Williams with 3.5 seconds left.
The Knights stayed hot into the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 47-37. Terron Robinson broke the run with a basket 44 seconds into the period. The Spartans were held scoreless until Myles Estrada scored with 4:07 remaining. Kaleb Robinson converted both ends of a one-and-one with 2:37 left to cut the Knights lead to 51-43, the final time the Spartans were within a single digit. FHN scored the next nine points, a run broken by Terron Robinson’s 3-pointer with 27.9 seconds left. Kaleb Anderson sank two free throws with 15.7 seconds remaining.
Terron Robinson finished with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Kaleb Anderson added 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Myles Estrada scored 7 points and dished 2 assists. Austin Crudup pulled 5 rebounds.
The Knights improved to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in the GAC South while the Spartans fell to 7-12 overall and 2-5 in conference action. FHC will try for that elusive first conference win on Friday, February 2, hosting Troy at 7 pm.
