Size: 3 months

Materials: 5 50g (1.75 oz) balls of baby yarn.

1 pair 3.25mm (3 US) needles

1 pair 4mm (6 US) needles

3 buttons

3.5 metres (4 yards) of ¼” wide ribbon

Tension: 32 sts = 10 cm (4”) in stocking stitch on 3.25mm (3 US) needles
PATTERN ROWS: Multiples of 18
Rows 1, 2, and 4: Knit.
Row 3: (k2tog) 3 times, *(yo, k1) 6 times, (k2tog) 6 times* Repeat from * to * to last 6 sts. (k2tog) 3 times.
CHRISTENING GOWN:

SKIRT: With one ball of yarn and size 4.5mm needles cast on 72 sts.

With a second ball of yarn, on same needles, cast on 141 sts.

With a third ball of yarn, on same needles, cast on 72 sts.

Work pattern rows for approx 2” on each section, increasing 3 sts evenly across middle section to 144 sts. in the first row. Join by working pattern across all three sections with first ball of yarn. Cut second and third balls off leaving 3” tails.

Continue working pattern rows, ending with Row 2, until skirt is approx 13.5” long. Cast on an additional 17 sts at end of row for Picket Edging.

Picket Edging: K16, k2tog, turn.
**Row 1: S1, k1, yo, k2tog, k3, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k2tog, yo, k2.
Row 2: K15, yo, (k2tog) 2 times, turn.
Row 3: S1, k1, yo, k2tog, k2, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k2tog, yo, k2.
Row 4: K16, yo, (k2tog) 2 times, turn.
Row 5: S1, k1, yo, k2tog, k1, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k2tog, yo, k2.
Row 6: K17, yo, (k2tog) 2 times, turn.
Row 7: S1, k1, yo, k2tog, k3, yo, k2tog, k1, k2tog, yo, k4, yo, k2tog, yo, k2.
Row 8: K18, yo, (k2tog) 2 times, turn.
Row 9: S1, k1, yo, k2tog, k4, yo, s1, k2tog, psso, yo, k6, yo, k2tog, yo, k2.
Row 10: Cast off 5 sts (loosely), k13 (14 sts on needle), yo, (k2tog) 2 times, turn**. Repeat from ** to ** until all sts from the skirt have been worked off, ending on Row 10. Cast off remaining 17 sts.

Sleeves:

With 4.5mm needles cast on 72 sts and work pattern rows of skirt until sleeve measures approx 6.5”, ending with row 2.

Change to 3.25mm needles.

Next Row: K3, (k2tog) repeat to last 3 sts, k3. (39 sts on needle)
Next Row: Knit.

Eyelet Row: K2, (yo, k2tog, k1) 12 times, k1.

Next 5 Rows: Knit.
Cast off 39 sts.
Make 2 sleeves the same.

Bodice: With 3.25mm needles pick up the 72 sts of right back of skirt. Pick up 72 sts of right sleeve. Pick up 141 sts of front of skirt. Pick up 72 sts left sleeve. Pick up 72 sts of left back of skirt. (429sts on needle)
Decrease across left back as follows: K1, (k3tog) 19 times, (k2tog) 7 times.
Decrease across left sleeve as follows: (K2tog) 36 times.
Decrease across front as follows: (K2tog) 7 times, (k3tog) 37 times, (k2tog) 8 times.
Decrease across right sleeve as follows: (K2tog) 36 times.
Decrease across right back as follows: (K2tog) 7 times, (k3tog) 19 times, k1. (178 sts on needle)
Eyelet Row: K3, *yo, k2tog, k1. Repeat from * to last st. K1
Next Row: Knit.

Shaping:

Row 1: K1, k2tog, *k2, k2tog, repeat from * to last 3 sts, k1, k2tog. (133 sts on needle)

Row 2: Knit.

Row 3: K5, (k2tog, k9) 11 times, k2tog, knit to end of row.

Rows 4 – 10: Knit.

Row 34: Knit.
Row 35: Knit. Cast off.

SEW SLEEVE SEAMS.

Sew back of skirt to 1” below beginning of bodice.

BUTTON & BUTTONHOLE BAND:

With 3.25mm needles pick up and knit 24 sts down right back edge to skirt seam. Pick up and knit 24 sts up left back to neck. (48sts on needle)
Next Row: Knit.
Next Row: K1, (yo, k2tog, k5) 3 times, knit to end of row. Cast off.
Darn in all loose ends. Sew on buttons. Slot ribbon through eyelets around sleeves and bottom of bodice.
BONNET: With 4.5mm needles cast on 72 sts. Work Pattern Rows until piece measures approx. 4”.
To Shape Crown:
Change to 3.25mm needles.
Row 1: (K10, k2tog) 6 times. (66 sts on needle)
Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: (K9, k2tog) 6 times. (60 sts on needle)
Row 4: Knit.
Row 5: (K8, k2tog) 6 times. (54 sts on needle)
Continue decreasing 6 sts every other row until six sts remain. Cut yarn leaving a 12” tail.

Thread needle with tail and draw through the 6 sts. Sew up back seam of crown.

Neckband: Pick up and knit 60 sts across lower edge.

Row 1: Knit, working 2 sts tog 4 times in centre back.
Row 2: Knit, working the first 2 sts tog, the last 2 sts tog and 2 sts tog twice in centre back.
Row 3: Knit, working first 2 sts tog, the last 2 sts tog and 2 sts tog once in centre back. Cast off. Sew on ribbon ties.

BOOTIES: With 4.5mm needles cast on 36 sts and work Pattern Rows until piece measures approx. 2.5”.

Change to 3.25mm needles.

Next Row: Eyelets: K1, *yo, k2tog. Repeat from * to last st, yo, k1. (37 sts)
Next Row: Knit.
Knit 12 sts and place on holder, knit the next 13 sts for instep, place the last 12 sts on a holder. Work in garter stitch on the 13 instep sts for 24 rows. Pick up and knit 12 sts along one side of instep, knit the 12 sts from holder. Knit back, picking up 12 sts along other side of instep, knit the 12 sts from holder. (61 sts on needle) Knit 9 rows, decreasing 1 st at each end and 1 st at centre of last row. Continue in garter stitch, decreasing 1 st at each end and k2tog twice in centre of every other row 2 times. (50 sts on needle) Knit 1 row. Cast off. Sew foot and leg seam. Slot ribbon through eyelets. Make 2 the same.
