THE HUGUENOT SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA

You are part of the Huguenot heritage; take up this heritage and join our Society, which was founded in 1953 and strives to preserve and cultivate our Huguenot heritage by keeping alive an awareness of the significance of the settlement of the Huguenots in South Africa.

Would you like to know more about your own Huguenot past? Become a member of our Society and support the research of the Huguenot history and of genealogy. The Society has, together with other interest groups, founded the Genealogical Institute of S.A. for the preservation and continuation of genealogy in South Africa. Membership of the Huguenot Society makes the preservation and exhibiting of Huguenot relics in the Huguenot Memorial Museum possible as well as the organization of commemoration functions at the Museum and Monument (which are both owned by the Society’s Huguenot foundation). You can link up with an international Huguenot network with societies in France, Switzerland, Germany, England, Ireland, the USA and Canada.

The Huguenot Society strives to preserve and cultivate the religious convictions and traditions of the Huguenots. Membership is open to any person who supports these objectives. Provision is made for individual and corporate membership.

Publications

The Huguenot Bulletin is published annually. It contains a large variety of interesting articles on Huguenot families and is a medium through which results of genealogical and other Huguenot research are made known. All members receive the Bulletin as well as various newsletters.

The memorial volume The Huguenots of South Africa 1688 – 1988 by Pieter Coertzen is available in Afrikaans and English. Notification is given of other publications from time to time.

Functions and other activities

The Reformation is commemorated annually on the last Sunday of October. The Reformation Service is held at the Huguenot Monument on occasion. The annual members’ meeting of the Huguenot Society is held at Franschhoek the day before. Family gatherings during this weekend are encouraged to give the family an opportunity to make a presentation on their family history at the annual meeting.
