JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Casual Stage Technician
Department: Production
Responsible To: Head of Stage
Deputy Head of Stage
Shows on the Crucible Stage usually run for 4-9 weeks and wherever possible casual staff should be available to work all the performances. This usually includes midweek and Saturday matinees. A production week precedes the opening of a show and staff are expected to be free to work for most of the week, daytimes and evenings.
Lyceum shows are brought to us by a commercial management and they run for 1 or 2 weeks, except the Christmas show which runs for 5-6 weeks. As well as a few opportunities for casual work on the shows, they often require a lot of staff at the beginning and end of their run (the get-in and fit up, and the get-out). The get-in is usually at the start of the week sometimes on a Sunday. Get-outs are usually after the Saturday evening performance and can run into the early hours of the morning.
Work involves off - loading trucks, and moving sets costumes, props and electrical equipment. The team then erects the sets and helps the incoming technical staff to get the show ready. Some sets are very heavy and you need to be physically fit, with good hearing and sight. You must be comfortable with working at heights. Basic carpentry or metalwork skills can be useful. Shows are run from a list of instructions (a cue sheet) so you must be able to work both as a team member and take individual responsibility for cues. We would expect most applicants to already have some practical experience of theatre, e.g. through an amateur or school/college society.
MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Pay: £8.82 per hour with a minimum call of 3½ hours. Premium payments (at half time or single time extra as applicable) are paid for Sundays, Public Holidays and Get-Outs.
Roster: Employment is on a casual basis with hours offered as required. Typically calls will be offered on a weekly basis for visiting company shows and over a longer period for our own productions.
Holiday: Holiday entitlement is based on 1 week’s paid holiday per 12 weeks worked (pro-rata for periods of less than 12 weeks). In addition there is an entitlement to 8 Public Holidays over a full year worked (pro rata for part year worked).
