Below is a letter I sent to the Homestead Committee regarding an innovative way to make our county nursing home an even better facility using a model currently in practice in an award winning facility in Washington State. It combines assisted living, subacute, and child day care. In an effort to save paper and provide you with even more information you may view all the information referenced in the letter on the internet at www.providence.org.

Re: Communication for the Calumet Homestead Board meeting on June 24.

I would like to encourage the board to do everything within their power to make a great home for our county’s residents needing the Homestead’s care even better in the year’s to come. Attached are 4 pages profiling a national award winning nursing home facility with an attached child-learning center (day care). More information is available and certainly needed for such a project. This idea should be reviewed as a real possibility for the Calumet Homestead.

Providence Mount St. Vincent Nursing home has been named as one of the best facilities in the country by The New York Times in 1998. It received the 1997 Innovator of the Year Award from the Washington Association of Homes for the Aging. The nursing home may be contacted at 206.937.3700. You may call the child care center at 206.938.6195. This nursing home is member of the Pioneer Network in elder care. The Pioneer Network promotes these new initiatives in care. The pioneer network is holding a conference about these new initiatives in elder care in Chicago in early August. It may be a good idea to have a county representative present who is passionate about this idea. I was most impressed with Barbara Mott’s genuine concern and interest as she gave me a tour of the facility this last Monday. More information can be obtained at www.pioneernetwork.net.

As a side note, when I called the learning center and nursing home. A message played saying the waiting list is closed and may be reopened in fall due to excessive demand. This is the waiting list that is closed. What a nice problem to have that they needed to close the waiting list due to excessive demand! I believe together we can continue to make the Calumet County Homestead a top-notch facility while utilizing all the building and staff capacity to continue the tradition of excellence while operating on a self-sustaining budget.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.
