October Issue, 2015
Information about college scholarships and financial aid opportunities that comes to the Hartsville High School Guidance Department is published in a Scholarship Newsletter each month. This information is delivered to all seniors during their advisory period on the first Monday of each month. It is the responsibility of the student to share this information with parents and guardians.
Clemson University’s Lyceum Scholars Program
Who: Seniors planning to attend Clemson and are interested in exploring the moral, political, and economic foundations of a free society.
Amount: $2,500 a year for four years

Winthrop Transfer Tuesday
Who: Seniors with the intention of starting at a two year college and then transferring to Winthrop
What: Information sessions designed to simplify the transfer admissions process and help students make a smooth transition to Winthrop University. The program provides students with information about the procedure for applying as a transfer student, transfer credit policies and available scholarships.
Where: Winthrop University
When: Choice of Oct. 6, Nov. 10, Dec. 8, or Jan. 5 from 3:30-6:30 pm.

Benedict College Open House
What: Receive information on scholarships, financial aid, and academic programs. Performances by the marching band, cheerleaders, concert choir, and others. Free lunch. Fall football game at 2:00 pm.
Where: Benedict’s Benjamin E. Mays Human Resources Center – GYM.
When: November 7, 2015 from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon

SC School of the Arts at Anderson University Fall Preview and Audition
Who: Seniors
What: Experience an AU overview, campus tour, meet students and professors, and complete a scholarship audition or portfolio review with a professor.

When: October 17th- Music Preview
October 24th- Theatre Preview
November 20th - November 21st- Music, Theatre, and Art

Harry Hampton and Wallace F. Pate Scholarship
Who: Seniors wishing to further their education in the natural resources discipline such as wildlife biology, fisheries biology, forestry, or marine science.
Amount: The Harry Hampton Scholarship is a 4-year $5,000/yr. scholarship. The Wallace F. Pate Scholarship is a one year $1,500 scholarship.

David M. Cline Scholarship
Who: Seniors wishing to pursue a degree in law enforcement/criminal justice/forensic science.
Amount: One year $2,000 scholarship

James O. Thomason Scholarship
Who: Seniors wishing to pursue a degree in print or photo journalism, advertising, public relations or mass communications.
Amount: $2,000/yr. for four years.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program
Who: African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American Seniors
Criteria: Minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities, meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria
Amount: Up to full tuition, depending upon need.

Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship
Who: Seniors who are planning careers in government service
Criteria: Essay stating why he or she plans a career in government service including any inspiration to be derived from the leadership of George Washington in his famous crossing of the Delaware. Essay must be accompanied by a recommendation from the principal or guidance counselor.
Amount: Between $500 and $5,000

National MS Society Scholarship
Who: Seniors
Criteria: Diagnosed with MS or have a parent with MS.
Amount: $1,000 to $3,000

FMU McNair Scholarship
Who: Seniors
Criteria: Minimum SAT score of 1100 or ACT score of 24, minimum GPA of 3.0, have an interest in a career in public service (broadly defined), and be willing to commit to study abroad and service learning opportunities while enrolled at FMU.
Amount: Tuition, fees, room and board, part of the FMU Honors Program, and opportunity to study abroad.

WACE Scholarship
Who: Seniors applying to a WACE Partner Institution (Johnson and Wales is the closest)
Criteria: Minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Amount: $6,000 a year for 4 years

Columbia College’s Momentum Scholarship
Who: Senior females
Criteria: Candidates must demonstrate high school or community involvement, courage and motivation, commitment to learning, and the potential for leadership on campus.
Amount: From $14,000 to full tuition
How to Apply: Candidates must be nominated by November 2, 2015. See your guidance counselor for information on being nominated.

Mercer University Engineering Scholarship Challenge
Who: Seniors interested in Engineering, Industrial Management, or Technical Communication
Criteria: On Challenge Day, Mercer meets with students to show them the campus, labs and technology, and give them an opportunity to meet with the faculty and students. Mercer uses a design problem or a test of math skills to help make scholarship recommendations.

Deadline: The Scholarship Challenge is held on November 14th. Applications for the Scholarship Challenge must be submitted by October 15th. **Students do not need to have applied for admission to Mercer to participate in this event.
The American Legion 2015-2016 HW Dare Maness High School Oratorical Scholarship Program- “A Constitutional Speech Contest”
Who: High School Students
Criteria: Students will give a prepared oration on some aspect of the Constitution of the United States with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government. A list of all rules can be obtained from the Guidance Office.
Amount: Up to $2,000 at the State level. Up to $18,000 at the National level.
How to Apply: Applications may be obtained from the Guidance Office.
Deadline: Post contests must be concluded by January 23, 2016.
SC High School Writing Contest
Who: Juniors and Seniors
Criteria: Students respond to the topic “How should we improve the state of SC?” Students can respond in any genre (fiction, drama, poetry, essay) in 750 words or less.
Amount: Cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250 will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners.
