Deputy Head Job Description

Core Purpose

To work in partnership with the Headteacher and governing body to provide strategic leadership that secures success and continuous improvement for the school,ensuring high quality education for all pupils and the highest standards of learning and achievement in accordance with statutory requirements.

In the absence of, or under the direction of the Headteacher, be responsible forthe overall day to day operational leadership and management of the school.

To provide children, parents and staff with a range of opportunities to develop links and cohesion between other schools and the wider community.

To enable all our children to develop as successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.

To carry out duties in accordance with the provision of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and within the range of teachers’ duties set out in that document, and the National Standards for Teachers.

Shaping the future

The DeputyHead will:

  • Ensure the vision for the school is clearly articulated, shared, understood and acted upon effectively by all.
  • Work within the school community to translate the vision into agreed objectives and operational plans which will innovate and sustain school improvement.
  • Demonstrate the vision and values in everyday work and practice.
  • Motivate and work with others to create a shared culture and positive climate.
  • Model and coach excellence in leadership and implement systems that nurture leadership opportunities at all levels.
  • Lead change, encourage creativity and the use of appropriate new technologies to achieve excellence.
  • Ensure that strategic planning takes account of the diversity, values and experience of the school and community at large.
  • Evaluate and monitor the school’s performance.

Leading Learning and Teaching

The Deputy Head will:

  • Be an outstanding classroom practitioner, exemplifying a high standard of teaching and promoting high expectations for all members of the school community.
  • Enable a consistent and continuous school-wide focus on pupils’ achievement, using data and benchmarks to monitor progress in every child’s learning.
  • Monitor pupil progress and attainment to ensure teacher’s accountability for this.
  • Ensure quality provision for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural education in line with the vision statement.
  • Build a culture and ethos of challenge and support where all pupils can achieve success and become engaged in their own learning.
  • Support and evaluate the delivery of a diverse, flexible curriculum and implement an effective assessment framework.
  • Monitor, evaluate and review classroom practice to challenge and support improvement.
  • Prepare and provide quality CPD for staff.
  • Consult with SLT and other senior leaders to analyse data and set appropriate targets.

Developing self and working with others

The Deputy Head will:

  • Build a collaborative learning culture within the school and actively engage with other schools.
  • Develop and maintain effective strategies and procedures for staff induction, professional development and conduct performance review for specified staff.
  • Provide support and guidance for staff in professional matters.
  • Acknowledge the responsibilities and celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams.
  • Develop and maintain a culture of high expectations for self and for others and take appropriate action when performance is unsatisfactory.
  • Regularly review own practice, set personal targets and take responsibility for own personal development.
  • Manage own workloadto allow an appropriate work/life balance.

Managing the organisation

The Deputy Head will:

  • Produce and implement clear, evidence-based improvement plans and policies for the development of the school and its facilities.
  • Ensure that policies and practices take account of national and local circumstances, policies and initiatives.
  • Support and actively recruit staff, managing programmes of induction and workload to achieve the vision and goals of the school.
  • Challenge inappropriate staff behaviour and deal effectively with staffing issues, including those relating to conduct, competence and attendance.
  • Use and integrate a range of technologies effectively and efficiently to manage the school.
  • Maintain school self evaluation documentation and evidence in partnership with the Headteacher.
  • Respond to concerns or complaints efficiently and with sensitivity in accordance with whole school policy.

Securing Accountability

The Deputy Head will:

  • Work with the governing body (providing information, objective advice and support) to enable it to meet its responsibilities.
  • Support the Headteacherin evaluating the pace and progression ofschool improvement.
  • Support the Headteacherin developing and presenting a coherent, understandable and accurate account of the school’s performance to a range of audiences including governors, parents and carers.
  • Reflect on personal contribution to school achievements and take account of feedback from others.

Strengthening Community

School Community

The Deputy Head will ensure effective communication between home and school (newsletters and website). She will promote links with parents, LA, local schools, outside bodies and agencies and the local community.

Wider Community

The Deputy Head will collaborate with the wider educational community for the benefit of the school’s community and others. S/he will demonstrate a belief that community and school are interdependent and that engagement with the community promotes school development.The Deputy Head should commit to engaging with the internal and external school community to secure equity and entitlement.

The Deputy Head will:

  • Create and promote positive citizenship skills that contribute to society for example challenging prejudice and promoting equality.
  • Ensure learning experiences for pupils are linked into and integrated with the wider community and promote commitment to serving the common good.
  • Ensure a range of community-based learning experiences.
  • Establish and maintain effective partnerships with agencies and organisations within the extended community.
  • Seek opportunities to share practice with other educational institutions.

Global Community

The Deputy Head will actively promote the rights of children within the school.

The Deputy Head will:

  • Seek to harness the good practice from other world wide educational systems. Share and reflect international educational research and initiatives
  • Promote understanding and consideration of current ethical debates for example sustainability and global warming.
  • Seek opportunities to share the excellence in our practice with other international educational institutions.
  • Foster the values of the rights, respects and responsibilities agenda in all decision making.

Care, guidance and support for children

  • Promote personal development and wellbeing of pupils.
  • Provide care and guidance.
  • Manage behaviour consistently and positively.
  • Monitor standards of uniform/attendance and punctuality.
  • Monitor safety of transfer to/from school.
  • Run or delegate the running of the School Council, using pupil voice to inform school self-evaluation and developments.
