Graduate student travel award:
Kaushik Ghosal, a doctoral student at Miami University, won OMV-SfN's first Graduate Student Travel Award from the Society for Neuroscience. His major advisor at Miami is Kathy Killian, Ph.D. The award supported Kaushik's travel to the 2005 SfN annual meeting in Washington, D.C., where he presented the poster "Effects of social interaction on Fos-like immunoreactivity in cricket brain and SOG."
Chapter-sponsored lectures, including Grass Traveling Scientist Program:
2005 Grass Lecture – May 10, 2005
OMV-SfN’s 2005 Grass Traveling Scientist Award supported the visit of Pat R. Levitt, Ph.D., to the chapter’s annual scientific meeting held at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio on May 10, 2005. Dr. Levitt is Professor and Director of the Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development at Vanderbilt University. The topic of Dr. Levitt’s Grass Lecture was "Cortical Interneurons and Neurodevelopmental Disorders." This topic combined Dr. Levitt’s latest research findings about cortical interneurons within a broadly conceived overview of neurodevelopmental disorders that was meaningful to multiple disciplines (including clinical and basic sciences) represented in the audience.
The Grass Lecture was open to the Wright State University community and the general public, as well as to OMV-SfN registrants. More than 120 people attended the lecture. Among OMV-SfN registrants were 29 faculty, 24 post-doctoral fellows and other staff, and 45 students.
Dr. Levitt’s Grass Lecture was the centerpiece of OMV-SfN’s second annual Neuroscience Day, a scientific meeting which was free to current OMV-SfN members. Following the Grass Lecture, Dr. Levitt participated in a small-group session with students. Faculty attended a concurrent session featuring scientific presentations by investigators at OMV-SfN’s sponsoring institutions (Miami University, the University of Cincinnati, and Wright State University), and were joined in that session by Dr Levitt. Speakers and presentation topics were:
Phyllis Callahan, Ph.D. (Miami University)
Orphanin FQ/Nociceptin Regulation of Prolactin Secretion.
Lori Isaacson, Ph.D. (Miami University)
Neurotrophin Regulation Of Peripheral Neurons.
