Highlights from Tamworth National Convention
Marilyn and Rena joined Anthea and Kris, from Melville, Jan and Judy from West Coast and Sue from Rockingham to make up the Western Australian delegation to this year’s VIEW Convention in Tamworth NSW.On Day 1 we opened with some Australian cultural items. Kevin Anderson (State MP for Tamworth) bought along his guitar and sang the national anthem. Barnaby Joyce (National MP for New England) read Dorothea Mackellar’s “My Country”. We then got down to business and heard from several speakers, including:
Gwen Wilton (Outgoing National President VIEW Clubs of Australia) - Gwen thanked all 16,000 members of VIEW across 320 Clubs for their ongoing support of Smith Family Programs. Of note - $7,500 was raised in this year’s “Share My Shoes” Campaign. So well done all the Instagrammers.
Dr Lisa O’Brien (CEO Smith Family) - Dr O’Brien reported on the outcomes of the Smith Family’s 2012 5 Year Plan and outlined the goals for the next 5 years. The Learning for Life program has achieved outstanding results in supporting disadvantaged students to optimize their school attendance and has increased school retention rates among this group. The Commonwealth Grant received in 2016 will enable the administration of an expanded LfL program to an additional 24,000 students by 2020. 2022, the end of the current 5 Year Plan, will mark 100 years of The Smith Family.
Marilyn and Rena finished the Day kicking up their heels at the Country and Western night sharing a table with the lovely ladies of Bribie Island (QLD) and Culburra Beach (southern NSW)
Day 2 commenced with an address from Christine Bartlett (Chairperson of The Smith Family) and the presentation of the George Forbes Oration by Anna Bligh. We then progressed into the debates. Bayswater City VIEW had a particular interest in Resolution 3 regarding students with a disability. Despite a valiant attempt by Rena (Bayswater) and Jean Clark (from Kenmore in QLD) our resolution was not formally chosen as the focus for VIEW advocacy for the next two years. The spotlight will go to Resolution 4 on the Medical Use of Marijuana.
Jan Roberts from Canberra was named as the Incoming President for the next two years
Marilyn and Rena then enjoyed the formal dinner of the convention, sharing a table with the lovely ladies from Forbes in rural NSW.
Day 3 was a half day in the beautiful Tamworth Town Hall built in 1934. We were entertained by a local singer, the Tamworth Pipe Band and the delightful Tamworth South Public School Choir.
Ladies Luncheon
On 19th September Marilyn shook off her jet lag to host 14 ladies to lunch at her home in Morley. Thank you everyone for your delicious contributions to the meal and your happy company.Friendship Day at Government House
Marilyn has booked us a guided tour of Government House for Tuesday 31st October. Meet at the Main Gate on St George’s Tce 10:45am SHARP. The Governor will not be there to receive us but I am sure it will be an interesting look around this historical residence. You’re Invited!
