Description:
The special needs classroom strives for academic and lifelong success by working toward mastery of goals stated in the IEP, successfully meeting standards through the Alabama Alternate Assessmentand following the Alabama Extended Standards in Math, Reading, Language Arts, Writing, Science and Social Studiesfor their grade level. Transition is addressed through participation in activities in and out of the classroom to improve functional life skills, which helps to prepare the students transitioningthrough high schoolonto adulthood. Life skills instruction is also an integral part of the daily class structure to teach the students about everyday social and communication skills.
Grading:
Daily Work-Counts for 60% of the grade and this includes completion of work in the classroom, effort put forth when completing the work, progress toward mastery of goals and participation in activities in the classroom.
Life Skills-Counts for 30% of the grade and this includes in and out of class tasks and assignments to improve social and life skills.
General Education-Counts for 5% of the grade and the case manager will work with the general education teacher on grading according to effort, behavior, and any class work that the student can participate in or complete on a modified curriculum.
Tests-Tests may be administered to be averaged and the score will equal 5% of the final grade for the grading period.
Attendance and Tardy Policy:
The morning tardy bell rings at 7:50 a.m. and all students should report to class at this time. If a student is late, it is the parent’s responsibility to sign in their child at the check-in/check-out office. Please do not go through the classroom to go to the office because this is often a disruption when other students are working. If your child needs to be picked up early (before the end of the school day at 2:52 p.m.) please go to the check-in/check-out office first to sign your child out and an office aid worker will come get your child and bring him/her to the office. The final bell rings at 2:52 p.m. –please be present to pick up your child no later than this time if they do not ride the bus.
Lesson Plans:
Each student has an individual lesson plan or schedule of what they will be working on for each period and each day of the week at their desk. This lesson plan or schedulefollows the Alabama Extended Standards and what the students need to be working on to achieve mastery of their goals and to meet standards through the Alabama Alternate Assessment. This is very important to assist in managing the different grade levels in the classroom and to individualize each student’s goals and requirements for the school year since every child is unique. The students have individual work stations with drawers at their desk where each subject is a different color drawer. This helps the students’ stay organized and understand what to work on throughout the school day. In addition to academic work, the students perform life skills activities throughout the year. Life skills are an integral part of the special needs program that happens every day in the classroom, such as improving social and communication skills, but then there are also specific tasks and activities that are planned in and out of the classroom, such as planning and cooking meals, washing/drying laundry, grocery shopping and work field trips to name a few.
Resources:
The resources available to the students to be able to achieve success areparaprofessionals to assist with one on one instruction, CPR/First Aid certified teacher and paraprofessionals, a registered nurse to administer medicine and to consult with if needed, a teacher that also serves as the bus driver for field trips, a kitchen/utility room area in the classroom to learn life skills in the home, a planting bed garden to learn about growing food that we eat and cook, a classroom restroom, a changing room, an extra workroom for related services, computers and an overhead projector for technology.
