Job Description
Job Title: / Volunteer Van DriverReports To: / Secondhand Superstore Coordinator supported by Part-time Transport Volunteer Coordinator
Location(s): / Primarily Oxfordshire, operating from Northway, OxfordCity
Job Purpose
1. Driving company vehicles regularly for up to 3 days/week. The vehicles are generally Luton furniture vans based at the secondhand superstore or a 16 passenger mini-bus. Often this work will include Thursday mornings, Saturdays and at other times to cover holidays and absences.
2. Planning of the collection and delivery of furniture, and supervision and coordination of Companions (our ex-homeless residents) and other volunteers, to provide excellent customer service at minimum cost; training, development, and support of Companions and volunteers, to enable them to perform effectively, to achieve personal development and meet organisational requirements.
Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
- Driving company vehicles in order to deliver and collect furniture, other donations and transport people.
- Contribute to the growth of revenue and maximisation of profit from effective and customer focused operations
- Coordinate, supervise and train other volunteers and Companions to ensure high quality customer service when interacting with the public
- Ensure driving, collection and delivery services are administered effectively and comply with the law at all times
- Develop and foster a team environment based on respect and mutual support to achieve the team goals
- Lead and teach team work by example
Specific Responsibilities
- In conjunction with the Secondhand Superstore Coordinator, supported by the Part-time Transport Volunteer Coordinator, plan and implement logistic processes for:
- Fleet operation including systems and process for scheduling to maximise customer service and reduce running costs
- Documented training system to cover all tasks, risks, health and safety for all jobs associated with the collection delivery and movement of goods.
- Increasing the quality and quantity of donated items to realise the highest profit
- Increasing our customer loyalty and attracting new customers
- Coordinate and supervise the team of other volunteers and Companions who are involved any day in collection and delivery.
- Induct and train drivers, driver’s assistants, and other team members into the collection and delivery team.
- Drive organisation vehicles to achieve our business purposes, including
- collecting donated goods
- delivering purchased items
- transporting goods to and from the different sites
- disposing of items at landfill
- where necessary, collecting and returning Companions each day
- Where physically able, manoeuvre, lift and carry furniture and domestic goods to and from vehicles, in and out of buildings, and up and down stairs. Also supervise and work with others doing this.
- Responsible for Health & Safety for all activities associated with loading, unloading, driving, and manoeuvring of vehicles including use of tail lift, driving skills, movement of goods within organisation’s premises and at customer premises, and ensuring all members of the vehicle team take their responsibility for Health & Safety seriously
- Maintain fleet security; account for and maintain fleet tools and equipment; conduct daily vehicle maintenance checks; maintain fleet appearance and cleanliness
- Undertake other driving duties as required
- Support the learning, skills development, and engagement in work activities of Companions
- Provide relief support in other operations as required.
- Any other duties as agreed with the Secondhand Superstore Coordinator, supported by the Part-time Transport Volunteer Coordinator, including additional duties and responsibilities to cover for holidays and absences.
Working Conditions
Emmaus Oxford currently runs its business operations six days a week, Monday to Saturday and provides 24 hour, 7 day/week support to the Residential premises where the Companions live. Days and hours of work will be agreed with the line manager as is appropriate with your role and responsibilities. Full-time drivers work a 37 hour week and their times of work are generally between 8.45 and 5.30, Monday to Saturday.
Emmaus works with vulnerable people. Employees and volunteers must observe the proper demarcation and professional boundaries while performing their role. All roles within Emmaus Oxford are subject to enhanced DBS [Disclosure and Barring Service, previously CRB ] checks.
Volunteers and employees must always act in a way which will maintain the good reputation of Emmaus Oxford, upholding the policies and procedures of Emmaus and striving to preserve good working relationships with employees, other volunteers, Companions and trustees. Volunteers and employees are obliged to keep the appropriate and key personnel well informed of significant matters relating to the organisation, either regarding its residential or retail activities.
All volunteers are encouraged to develop and maintain a positive and involved relationship with the Emmaus movement at local, regional, national and international levels.

Requirements
It is essential for you to be able to drive to carry out your role and this is a large part of your role. If you lose your licence or are otherwise unable to fulfil your responsibilities to our satisfaction, you should put this in writing immediately to the Secondhand Superstore Coordinator and the Part-time Transport Volunteer Coordinator so that potential other volunteer roles can be discussed.
Where the person is physically able this position requires the ability to lift and move furniture, sometimes large and heavy, up and down stairs, into and out of vehicles and buildings.
