Job Opening for President/CEO

The President is the Chief Executive and Administrative officer of the Chamber and is responsible to the Board of Directors for the full range of activities: coordination of the program of work; organizational structure and procedures; motivation of volunteers; income and expenditures; maintenance of membership; employment, training and supervision of staff; interpretation of policy; execution of short term plans; development and execution of long-range planning.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Management, Public Relations, Marketing, Business, or closely related field preferred.
  • At least three years experience in the Chamber profession or association management.
  • Demonstrable interpersonal and organizational skills, including flexibility, empathy, the ability to take direction, the ability to provide direction, the ability to multi-task, analytical thinking skills and a desire for professional growth.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct efficient and effective meetings and lead committee work.
  • The ability to travel, participate in some after-hours and weekend functions.
  • Computer proficient with Microsoft office systems including Excel, Power Point, Publisher and Word.
  • Maintain a minimum of 20 hours of professional development annually.
  • Preferred IOM designation, but not necessary.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Program of Work

  • Through the proper committee, he/she is responsible for identification of chamber and community needs and for the preparation of a program of work designed to meet these needs. This involves a constant evaluation of the program, with recommendations for change as needed, and a system of measuring progress towards attainment of program and community goals.

Chamber Structure and Procedures

  • The president must pay constant attention to the internal structure of the chamber to ensure that the organization is effectively geared to function with maximum efficiency in the anticipation, identification and solution of chamber/community problems. The President will recommend to the board such changes in structure and procedures as needed.

Motivation of Volunteers

  • Motivation of Volunteers: Key to the effectiveness of the chamber is the ability of the president to motivate and inspire volunteers to creative and fruitful action.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Through the budget committee, the president is responsible for developing the chamber budget and relating budget to program goals. As approved by the board, the president is responsible for all expenditures within the framework of the budget. He/she will be responsible for the preparation of monthly financial statements of income and expenses and financial reports as needed for each board meeting. He/she will ensure that financial records of the chamber are audited annually as required by the Chamber Bylaws. He/she will seek maximum staff efficiency in all financial procedures.

Personnel

  • The president is responsible for the employment of all staff personnel for the Chamber, the assignment of their duties, the supervision of their work, and the establishment within the framework of the approved budget of the terms of their employment.
  • As indicated by the program of work, he/she creates such departments as are needed to implement the program.
  • The president will develop and conduct continuing on-the-job training programs and will ensure participation in professional conferences, seminars and institutes as are needed to develop and maintain operations at peak efficiency.
  • The president must create working conditions that are conducive to maximum performance and employee morale.

Interpretation of Policy

  • The president will ensure that chamber policy, as established by the board, is properly recorded in minutes and indexes in the policy manual.
  • He/she will assist the board, councils, committees, members and staff in interpretation of policy in relation to any given question or program.
  • He/she will assist the chairman of the board of directors in preparations of statements of chamber position on public issues.

Plant Management

  • Supervise the operation and maintenance of the Chamber facility.
  • Within budget limits, approve expenditures for operation and maintenance.
  • Recommend changes or additions necessary to maintain desired standards of appearance, safety, and adequacy.
  • Endeavor to see that the Chamber building accommodates the Chamber’s growth and purpose rather than dictates its means of operation.

Long-Range Planning

  • Under the direction of a constantly evolving board of directors and an annually changing roster of officers, the president is responsible for maintaining continuity and consistency in programming.
  • Based on proper research of community needs, the president must anticipate emerging and long-range problems and recommend chamber and community programs to meet such problems.

Constituent Relations

  • He/she is frequently called upon to relate chamber activities and represent the chamber’s membership to all other groups and local governments in an effort to improve the commercial, industrial and civic life of the community. The president represents the chamber in meetings of local, state and national organizations. He/she must constantly strive to develop a better public understanding of the purpose and functions of the organization.
  • Board of Directors: The president must earn and maintain the respect and confidence of the board, individually and collectively. The president is responsible for preparing an agenda, maintaining board minutes and records, carrying out plans and programs of the board in accordance with established policies, serving as representative of the board for all contacts with the chamber staff, initiating programs for consideration by the board, and properly reporting and advising the board on all matters under consideration.
  • Chamber Membership: The president must motivate members to support personally and financially an aggressive chamber program. The incumbent must analyze and interpret needs of members and recommend revisions in the program of work to improve service and assistance to make membership more valuable. The president will entertain suggestions, proposals, and requests from the members and translate them into action consistent with the fundamental objectives and policies of the chamber. He/she will render such personal service to members as the occasion may require and time may allow.
  • Community: Through personal contacts with key community leaders, the president must earn and maintain the respect and confidence of local government and business leaders to help shape the community. He/she is frequently called upon to relate chamber activities to others to improve the commercial, industrial and civic life of the community. The president represents the chamber in meetings of local, state and national leaders and organizations. He/she must constantly strive to develop a better public understanding of the purpose and function of the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce.
