16.2 Mapping: The Lone Star Republic

Directions: While visiting each Station, read the information as a group then be sure to follow the directions below to label your maps correctly. Neatness and accuracy count.

It is important to write very small to fit all on the map.

  1. Print “UNITED STATES” in large capital letters in the area northeast of Texas.
  2. Print “MEXICO” in large capital letters in the area southwest of Texas.
  3. Print the following next to the corresponding dot numbers

  1. Draw an arrow from the United States to the settlements of Washington and Columbus.
  2. Next to the arrow print “1821: Stephen Austin leads the first American settlers into Texas.”
  3. Next to dot #4 print “Austin, seat of Texas government.”

Group #1:

On your map:

  1. Inside of Mexico print: “1821: Mexico wins independence from Spain and welcomes Americans to Texas.”
  2. Inside of Mexico print: “1834: Santa Anna makes himself dictator of Mexico.”
  3. In the northern part of Texas print: 1835: Texas revolution begins.”

Group #2:

On your map:

  1. Trace the dashed lines with any color to represent Texan troop movements during the revolution.
  2. Use the same color to identify Texan victories during the war. Color the key symbols.
  3. Use a second color to outline the solid lines representing Mexican troop movements during the revolution.
  4. Use the same second color to identify Mexican victories during the war. Color the key symbols.
  5. Use the Texas color to trace arrow #1 to show a Texan advance on San Antonio. Color the battle symbol to show a Texan victory. Print “December 1835” next to it.
  6. Use the Mexico color to trace arrow #2 from Mexico to San Antonio. Print “Santa Anna” next to it. Color the battle symbol to show the Mexican victory at the Alamo. Print “March 1836: The Alamo” next to it.

On your map:

  1. Next to the town of Washington, print “March 1836: Texas leaders issue a declaration of independence.”
  2. Next to dot #5, print “March 1836: Texas prisoners killed at Goliad.”
  3. Trace arrow #3 to San Jacinto using your Texas color. Write “Sam Houston” alongside the arrow. Nearby print “Remember the Alamo” “Remember Goliad”.
  4. Trace arrow #4 to San Jacinto using your Mexico color. Write “Santa Anna” next to it.
  5. Color the battle symbol to show a Texan victory. Print “April 1836: Texas Revolution ends at the Battle of San Jacinto.”

On your map:

  1. Put the following dates in the space below the map:
  • 1836: Texas gains its independence from Mexico and becomes the Republic of Texas.
  • 1836: Congress turns down Texas’ request to be admitted to the Union. Why does Congress turn down Texas’ request?
  • 1845: Congress decides to let Texas become the 28th state.
  • 1846: The Mexican American War begins.
  1. Inside the territory marked “DISPUTED AREA,” print “claimed by the United States and Mexico.” Lightly shade this area.
