Dear Parent/Guardian:
There are students in your child’s class who have a potentially life-threatening allergy to peanuts/all nuts. An accidental contact with these foods, even in tiny amounts, can cause a severe allergic reaction and even death for those who have this condition. A peanut/nut allergy for children is a very serious issue.
Food allergies can cause reactions ranging from itching or swelling of the lips, tongue or mouth, to life-threatening shortness of breath and a drop in blood pressure.
Avoidance, education, awareness and preparedness are the four keys to management of a food allergy. This means not coming into contact with anything that has even small traces of the food allergen. Nuts/peanuts may be concealed in processed and baked foods. Examples include baked goods, candy, cereals, chili, cookies, dips, egg rolls, ice cream and spaghetti sauces.
Please take this into consideration when sending in food for your child for parties and special occasions. Only commercially prepared foods can be sent in, and the ingredients must be noted and labeled.
Please take the time at home to discuss the importance of not sharing food with any other student at school.
Thank you.
