IMSD Program Information

General

The Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity(IMSD) Program is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). The IMSD Program now in its 13th year, is a collaborative effort between the University of Washington Department of Bioengineering and the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity. (Principal Investigator: Dr. Patrick Stayton, Bioengineering; Co-Principal Investigator: Dr. Beth Traxler, Microbiology; TeriL. Ward, Director IMSD Program.

Mission

To increase the numbers of underrepresented (URM) students entering biomedical/biobehavioral graduate programsand biomedical/biobehavioralresearch professions.

The Program

IMSD will provide 15-20 paid internships each summer for students. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a 10-week instructional laboratory experienceat the University of Washington. All participants will be introduced to key biomedical laboratory techniques and equipment.

The criteria for program participation:

  • US citizen or Permanent Resident
  • At least one year of undergraduate studies including one science or math series
  • Freshmen or Sophomore class standing (Former Running Start participants are eligible to apply)
  • Pursuing a major in one of the biomedical/biobehavioral sciences
  • Educational goal of a PhD or MD/PhDin a biomedical/biobehavioral sciences program.
  • Must be availablefor 10 weeks: June 24th – August 30th (scheduled 35-40 hours per week), and participate in creating and presenting a poster in the annual summer IMSD Poster Session.

Compensation

Salary: 2013 - $10.50/hour. (35-40 hours per week)

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT HOUSING: The IMSD Program DOES NOTpay for room, board and living expenses and does not reimburse.
