Overview of British Literary Time Periods Newsletter

As an introduction to the literary periods of British literature, you will work in small groups to research one time period and prepare a newsletter to inform your classmates about your time period. Using Elements of Literature, 6th Course, review the information on the following pages; this will form the basis for your newsletters.

Each group will be assigned one of the following literary periods to research:

Romantic / 706-718
Victorian / 878-894
Modern / 1022-1038

Your group needs to make sure to cover at least the following aspects of your literary period:

·  Major historical happenings and figures

·  Major authors and their writings

·  Entertainment and leisure activities

·  Genres of literature used and developed

You should also develop some other topics from your reading of the text.

Grading- This project will count 3 times for the first quarter. You will be graded using the following rubric:

Knowledge of Time Period as Shown Through the Articles: / 5- Shows an excellent grasp of the time period through specific details and accurate information
4- Shows an above average knowledge of the time period through details and accurate information
3- Shows knowledge of the time period through accurate information, but relies mostly on generalizations
2- Shows little knowledge of the time period with few details; some information may be inaccurate
1- Provides very little information about the time period and/or gives a lot of inaccurate information
Quality of Writing: / 5- Exhibits superb style and diction. There are few to no grammatical errors.
4- Exhibits above average writing ability. There are few grammatical errors.
3- Demonstrates grade level writing ability. Grammatical errors are present, but do not detract from the overall meaning of the articles.
2- Demonstrates below average writing ability. Grammatical errors begin to detract from the overall meaning of the articles.
1- Fails to show appropriate effort in the writing of the articles; grammatical errors are overwhelming.
Use of MLA format (including Works Cited): / 5- A superior grasp of MLA format is shown through parenthetical citations and the Works Cited page.
4- Very minor errors exist in the implementation of MLA format.
3- The overall concept of using MLA format is shown, though few errors may exist.
2- Errors in MLA format are prevalent throughout the articles and the Works Cited page.
1- This work demonstrates little to no understanding of MLA format.
Overall Formatting and Creativity of Newsletter (Group Grade): / 5- The newsletter shows a professional layout and strong creative content throughout.
4- The newsletter shows a consistent layout with many creative elements.
3- The newsletter makes use of a layout, but it may be inconsistent or difficult to follow. Some creative elements exist.
2- The newsletter’s layout detracts from the content; few creative elements exist.
1- The newsletter fails to exhibit a functional layout or creativity.

**The above sections will be averaged to produce a final grade on the 5- point scale.
