The imperfect tense is another way of speaking in the past tense. It exists in English and Spanish.
Regular Imperfect Conjugations
Regular -AR conjugations / Regular -ER & -IR conjugations
-aba / -ábamos / -ía / -íamos
-abas / x / -ías / x
-aba / -aban / -ía / -ían
Cantar (To sing) / Beber (To drink)
cantaba / cantábamos / bebía / bebíamos
cantabas / x / bebías / x

Irregular Imperfect verbs
Ser (To be) / Ir (To go) / Ver (To see)
Era / Éramos / Iba / Íbamos / Veía / Veíamos

Preterit Tense / Imperfect Tense
· I ate a lot of burritos last night.
o Verb Translation: to eat= comer
o Conjugation: (yo)comer=comí
o Sentence Translation: Yo comí muchos burritos anoche.
o Notice that the action is done and over with. / · I used to eat a lot of burritos as a kid.
· I was eating burritos when you called.
· I would eat burritos everyday when I lived in Mexico.
o Verb Translation: to eat= comer
o Conjugation: (yo)comer=comía
o Sentence Translations:
§ Yo comía muchos burritos cuando era niño.
§ Yo comía burritos cuando tú llamaste.
§ Yo comía burritos cada día cuando vivía en México.
o Notice that all of the examples contained ongoing actions that happened in the past.
