To think about the meaning of the story
Recap story of Hanukkah. Discuss how light/dark makes you feel (eyes closed/open, dark/light room). Discuss symbolism of Hanukkah. What does the light represent in this story?
· Conduct a candle meditation – Write down how they feel during it
· Children to reflect on story and what light signifies to them/Israelites in the story e.g. light makes me feel…. Light means…….
· Write a Hanukkah prayer thanking God and reflecting on the story
To identify practices linked to festivals – Hanukkah
Share story/PP/artefacts of customs associated with Hanukkah –food, cards, giving Gelt, Hanukiah, Dreidel. Read Sammy Spider’s First Hanukah/Light the lights.

Christmas
Discuss why light is important – it shows us the way in the dark, we feel safe.
Think of all the “lights” to do with Christmas – candles, tree lights, street decorations, the star, bright light of angels. Make a slideshow on whiteboard to stimulate the discussion.
To identify practices linked to festivals
· Advent - Discuss advent traditions (candles/calendars/advent songs)
· Advent reflection – create an Advent Wreath based on gifts of hope, peace, joy, & love. On 4 candles children to either draw or write something they hope for, a prayer for peace, a way they can bring happiness to someone and a way in which God’s love can be seen in their lives. Encourage them to reflect on
· Christingle - Tell story of history of Christingle – discuss the significance and symbolism of each part. Create real Christingles. Label picture of a Christingle and add meaning of each element.
· Cards - What makes a card a Christmas card? Group cards into sets e.g. nativity/ religious/ non-religious/ funny and discuss reasons for categories, look at different symbols on cards. Choose symbols to design cards to send to others – possibly link this to a charity (such as Amnesty or Shelter) who run Christmas card campaigns
To learn about different stories associated with festivals
Christmas story – angels prospective
· Tell the story of the angel visiting Mary (the annunciation). On a simple photocopied picture of the annunciation, ask children to complete speech bubbles for Mary and Gabriel or hot seat children in the roles of Mary or Gabriel.
· Read the birth story. Focus on when the angles bring the news to the shepherds. Listen and Read “The angel Gabriel from heaven came.” Create own images of what they think the Angel Gabriel might have looked like.
To think about the meaning of the story
Have a class discussion about the significance of angels in the stories.
Where do you think the angels came from? What do the angels say about the baby Jesus? What was their job/task in the stories? Can you think of other things, which could be in the story and which would show that baby Jesus was special? Would the stories be the same without them?
· Choose different people to visit and write own messages that the angels could have given.
· What message would you give to people now about Christmas? Write own speech bubbles to declare messages.
