This post is available from as soon as possible until 6th February 2018 based at the Emergency Department, Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), Paisley (annual attendance 75,000). This post will function as part of the middle grade rota with appropriate supervision depending on experience.
This post would be appropriate for doctors looking to complete additional training in Emergency Medicine. Previous experience is desirable.
The medical team consists of 17 consultants, three specialty doctors, one associate specialist and doctors in training grade posts. There are excellent educational facilities at both hospitals. There is an active teaching programme in place and medical staff are well supported by middle grade and Consultant staff. The successful applicants would be expected to be involved in the assessment and management of all patients attending the Emergency Departments.
The town of Paisley is situated less than 10 miles West of Glasgow. There are excellent road and public transport links between the hospitals and with the rest of Scotland.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine
INTRODUCTION
At present, there is a team of 17 Emergency Medicine Consultants providing an area wide Emergency Service. In addition the consultants provide support to Emergency Nurse Practitioners at the Vale of Leven Hospital.
The town of Paisley, situated less than 10 miles to the West of Glasgow, is known world-wide for its historical contribution to the textile industry. Although its links with the industry are now a thing of the past, Paisley remains the largest town in Scotland. It is unique in terms of the ease of accessibility to the cultural and culinary delights of Glasgow, as well as to the scenic and recreational attractions of the West of Scotland.
There are excellent road and public transport links with the rest of Scotland and with the progressive upgrading of the main road route to England, journeys to locations south of the border are becoming ever easier. Glasgow Airport (average flight time to London Heathrow - 1 hour) is located only 4 miles from Paisley and has excellent scheduled links to the other major airports in the British Isles and Western Europe.
Property prices in the area are naturally dependent upon type and location. Generally, however, prices in the centre of Glasgow are the most expensive but drop markedly in the outskirts and surrounding areas despite the ease of access. There are a number of excellent schools and further education facilities, with Glasgow offering 3 universities in addition to the University of the West of Scotland.

GENERAL INFORMATION
RoyalAlexandraHospital, Paisley. (RAH)
The town of Paisley is situated less than 10 miles to the West of Glasgow and 4 miles from GlasgowAirport (average flight time to London Heathrow 1 hour). The RoyalAlexandraHospital provides an extensive range of acute health services to the Renfrew District and beyond, with a population of 220,000 mainly concentrated in and around Paisley.
The Hospital first opened in 1986 and has a current bed complement of approximately 500. There are also facilities on site for General and Geriatric Psychiatry. In any one year the hospital treats nearly 30,000 inpatients, over 103,000 outpatients and day cases, and there are some 2,400 births in the Maternity Unit.
The Emergency Department is situated in a purpose built module, which includes Fracture/Orthopaedic Clinic facilities. The Intensive Care Unit is located on the floor directly above the Emergency Department.
Annually the Department treats approximately 75,000 new attendances and 1,200 head injury admissions to Emergency Department beds. In addition approximately 2,800 patients per annum attended the weekly Soft Tissue Clinic.
The major specialties are General Medicine, General Surgery and Urology, Anaesthetics, Gynaecology, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Orthopaedic Surgery. The Radiology Department – with dedicated Emergency Medicine X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI and CT Scanner (available 24 hours) – is adjacent to the Emergency Department. There is a 24 hour laboratory on-call service for Haematology, Microbiology, Blood Transfusion, and Biochemistry.
There is also a Helipad in the Hospital grounds with direct access to the main Hospital building.
InverclydeRoyalHospital, Greenock. (IRH)
InverclydeRoyalHospital is a modern, 450-bed DGH in Greenock with magnificent views over the River Clyde and beyond. The Hospital serves a population of around 125,000 in Inverclyde, Largs, Bute and the CowalPeninsula. All major acute specialties are represented within the hospital, including General and Vascular Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedic Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, Obstetrics, General Medicine, Rheumatology and Clinical Haematology. There is also a geriatric assessment unit. Obstetric and paediatric services are centralised at the RoyalAlexandraHospital.
The Emergency Department is situated on the ground floor in a purpose built facility which is currently being upgraded. The department has a varied case mix with 35 000 annual attendances and approximately 1500 return patients to the Soft Tissue Clinic. The department is well supported by the adjacent Radiology department and on-site laboratory facilities.
The Hospital has an active post-graduate education centre consisting of a well-stocked library, lecture theatre, four seminar rooms and reception area. The lecture theatre has seating for 80 with comprehensive audio-visual facilities, including live linkage to the main operating theatres plus the MATTUS link up to the Colleges of Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as the teaching hospitals in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen. The library has a bank of computers with easy access to the Internet for literature searches etc.
The standard of Primary Medical Care within the catchment area of all Hospitals is generally excellent, and major Regional Specialties are available in Glasgow. These include Plastic Surgery, Burns Unit, Maxillofacial Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Neurosurgery.

The above staff are divided between the emergency departments based on the individual departmental workloads.
DUTIES OF THE POST
This post is likely to provide cover as part of the junior or middle grade rota depending on experience. Clinical duties will be at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley. Clinical work will involve in the majority emergency department work under the supervision of the ED consultants and middle grade doctors
A commitment of approximately 4 in 9 weekends (band 1A) is anticipated.
Clinical duties will include :
- Reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and initial treatment of all emergencies.
- Appropriate referral of patients to hospital beds, regional specialties, outpatient clinics, or back to the community.
- Organisation of patients admitted to the observation beds.
- The performing of minor procedures, manipulation of fractures and dislocations in the Emergency Department
Audit:
- Involvement in clinical audit projects is encouraged and supported.
Other aspects of the post:
- Clinical teaching takes place routinely on the shop floor however there is also a weekly teaching session attached to this post
- Clinical teaching of medical students and extended training for ambulance paramedical staff which are often attached to the departments.
- Participation in team working with all other members of staff
- The post holder will be allocated an educational supervisor and work place based assessments will be carried out.
Communication responsibilities will include :
- Effective communication and liaison with all medical and service departments in the Hospital and outwit.
- Effective and timeous communication with general practitioners, including verbal and written communication on cases seen in the department.
- Effective communication with specialists in other hospitals.
Hours of Work
The appointees will join the junior grade rota. A full shift system operates. The appointee is contracted for 48 hours and the post carries a 1A banding.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.
TYPE OF CONTRACT / Fixed TermGRADE AND SALARY / Clinical Fellow
The salary range will be £31,220 to £41,305 per annum (pro rata)
New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
HOURS OF DUTY / Full Time40.00
SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via:
REMOVAL EXPENSES / Assistance with removal and associated expenses may be given and would be discussed and agreed prior to appointment.
