Programs Manager

Position Purpose: The purpose of this position is to manage public programs for the Scott County Historical Society (SCHS), and develop strategic partnerships and collaborations. These programs include school, interpretive, outreach and member programs, and any other special programs. The programs manager is responsible for the recruitment and management of volunteers, and maintenance of the contact database and communications. Work is performed with technical independence under the general direction of the executive director who may alter or amend the duties listed below. This position requires a high degree of public contact.

Position:Full-time permanent (Tuesday – Saturday)

Reports to: Executive Director

Wages / Benefits: $13-$15/hour based on experience & qualifications. Benefits include contribution to SCHS health insurance, PTO, and fun, collaborative work environment.

Supervisory Duties: Recruits, trains and schedules volunteers and interns

Essential Job Functions:

1.Develop and manage interpretive programs for the public utilizing the SCHS’s cultural resources

  • Research, compile and provide interpretive programs based on mission
  • Pursue collaborative efforts and partnerships with other organizations
  • Conduct audience research and program evaluations
  • Represent SCHS at community events (festivals, fairs, meetings, etc.)

2.Develop and deliver school programs that satisfy state graduation standards.

  • Solicit and utilize feedback from educators for school programs
  • Study state curriculum standards for purpose of developing relevant, useable programs
  • Develop SCHS website education resources / programs for teachers and students
  • Develop and present school program opportunities to area schools

3.Recruit and manageSCHS volunteers.

  • Recruit volunteers / interns and maintain volunteer / intern records
  • Work with other volunteer organizations to improve volunteer recruitment and retention
  • Attend internship fair, coordinate intern interviews, and supervise education / public program interns
  • Plan annual volunteer recognition event
  1. Communications
  • Answer telephone inquires
  • Update SCHS website
  • Systematically publicize programs and events (prepare and schedule social media posts)
  • Write articles for the Scott County SCENE, and SCHS blog on rotating schedule
  • Prepare and schedule delivery of bi-monthly emails
  • Edit SCHS quarterly newsletter
  1. Manage contact database (training provided)
  • Ensure memberships and donations are processed timely
  • Prepare monthly statistical reports
  • Create event listings

Other job duties:

  • Staff front desk – ring up admissions & store purchases
  • Submit a monthly activity and volunteer report to the executive director
  • Maintainprogram storage and work areas
  • Suggest and write grants for education/interpretive programs
  • Assist in providing research assistance
  • Assist in other SCHS projects and events as needed

Relationships: Reports to the Executive Director who reviews program goals and progress. Collaborate with the staff in developing exhibits and program content, and in ordering program materials. Work with community to acquire feedback on programming goals and progress.

Equipment Used:

Computer, printer, scanner, microfilm reader, telephone.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor Degree from a college or university with a degree in education, museum studies, history, or related field AND two years demonstrated experience in another museum, historical society, or equivalent organization which reveals ability to work well with people of all ages and abilities; the ability to develop and implement effective educational programs; and the ability to translate historical research and context into interesting and informative programs, AND some coursework in archival management, OR equivalent work experience and education to satisfactorily perform the duties of Programs Manager.

  • Knowledge of volunteer recruitment and retention
  • Knowledge of best-practices in elementary / middle-school teaching
  • Historical research skills
  • Ability to initiate collaborative projects
  • High degree of computer literacy
  • High degree of flexibility and creativity in developing programs and projects
  • Strong project management skills

Physical Aspects of the Job:

  • Transport of materials up to 30lbs
  • Retrieval letter-size boxes from shelving up to 10’ in height
  • Set up and take down of chairs and equipment
  • Occasional carrying and lifting of equipment to SCHS programs and presentations
  • Ability to use stairs
  • Ability to travel and provide reliable transportation
