Procedure
Paint Sampling and Analysis – Structures and Buildings
TP910
Revision: 3.7 Date: May 2012 Page 2 of 2
1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to provide guidelines for the identification of lead and chromium levels in paint at proposed abatement sites.
2.0 SCOPE
This procedure is to be used on all projects involving the removal or disturbance of paints on buildings, structures, and associated infrastructure, and is based on AS 4361.1 and AS 4361.2.
3.0 REFERENCES
AS 4361.1, Guide to Lead Paint Management, Part 1: Industrial Applications.
AS 4361.2, Guide to Lead Paint Management, Part 2: Residential and commercial buildings.
4.0 DEFINITIONS
Nil.
5.0 MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
· Sealable plastic bags, nominally 200 x 100mm
· Cutting devices such as chisels, scrapers, razor blades.
· Funnel for collection of paint scrapings
· Chux cleaning cloth or similar
· Fresh water
6.0 PROCEDURE
6.1 Samples shall be taken from a minimum of 1 location. If physical or historical evidence suggests that some touch-up maintenance may have taken place, additional samples shall be taken to fully characterise the structure, building or component.
6.2 Wipe the surface to be sampled to remove surface grime.
6.3 Label a plastic bag to identify structure and location, then affix bag to the bottom of the funnel.
6.4 Holding the funnel against the surface and below the test area, remove all paint back to bare metal using scraping devices. Take care to catch as many of the scrapings as possible. An area of 40-50mm square will provide sufficient sample for analysis.
6.5 Repeat steps 6.2 to 6.4 for each site.
Note: Thoroughly clean funnel and scraping implements between successive samples, and after completion of sampling, using water and clean cloth.
6.6 Seal the bags, record all details in the sample register in accordance with the relevant sample receipt procedure, and assign sample numbers. These numbers must be used at all times to ensure the correct matching of analysis results with samples.
6.7 Forward samples to test authority for analysis of lead and chromium content. Test results shall be reported to the nearest 0.01% by mass.
7. DOCUMENTATION
Report from test authority shall be retained in the relevant project file.
7.1 Report
Results shall be reported to the project manager in the form of a short report.
