Part two (partner/group):

You and your partner/s will use your collective research to create a newspaper. The newspaper will include two articles. The first will be an expository piece that summarizes the Battle of Antietam. The second will be a persuasive piece regarding the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation. You will also be expected to include photographs, battle statistics and eyewitness accounts. It’s your job to determine how to best cover the story, write it and create your newspaper.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

PART 1: RESEARCH & NOTES

  1. You will visit US History in Context on the Lawrence School database site
  2. You will choose two articles: 1 on the Battle of Antietam and 1 on the Emancipation Proclamation
  3. You will use NoodleTools and create at least 5 notecards for each article (10 total)
  4. Be sure to choose sources that will help you write your two articles for your newspaper
  5. Be sure to use your “Taking Effective Notes” handout to guide you as you take notes

PART 2: NEWSPAPER

You will use ALL of your sources to create a newspaper. The sources include:

  • Textbook (16.2)
  • Battles in the East BF
  • Emancipation Proclamation worksheet
  • The two database sources you chose to take notes on
  • Antietam National Park website:

Your newspaper should include the following:

1. A 3 paragraph expository article that gives an account of the Battle of Antietam. This article should summarize the main events that happened leading up to the battle, during the battle and after the battle. It should be factual and unbiased. It should include battle statistics and eyewitness statements (quotes).

2. A 3 paragraph Opinion Editorial (Op Ed) that addresses whether or not you believe President Lincoln should have released the Emancipation Proclamation. This is a persuasive/argumentative essay. It should include both a summary of the Emancipation Proclamation and your opinion of it. It should also include at least two quotes from the Emancipation Proclamation.

Note: Each group member should write 1 article. Each group member must alsocomplete a graphic organizer for that article. There are several organizers to choose from and they are all on the HMWK WIKI

3. Your newspaper should also include 3+ photographs and/or maps of the battle and the area where it took place. Each photograph/map should have a caption that explains what it is. Make sure to only include photos and maps that show what Antietam looked like in 1863 and not what it looks like today.

4. TONE & THEME: What is your message? Are you a CSA newspaper or a Union newspaper? Choose pictures and statistics accordingly. Also, remember that you are writing this article as though it is September of 1863. Make sure that you only include information that you would have access to at that time. For example, in 1863 you would not know that Antietam is going to become a national park.
