- Title of this lesson: Food and Culture in Literature: finding and creating a recipe card.
- Current lesson objective: After learning the specialized vocabulary used in cooking, students can read, write, and understand a recipe properly and can relate the type of cooking to the literature. To design a lesson of how a 9th grade teacher directs students to integrate Word and Internet into creating a recipe.
- Estimated time frame for teaching this lesson: 50 minutes.
- Technology used: (1) Microsoft Word, (2) Internet
- Teaching activities:
- Activity #1: Use Word to create the recipe card.
- Activity #2: Each student chooses their own recipe based on what they like to eat.
- Activity #3: Every student uses Word Processing to create recipe card document connected to the topic, and uses Internet to retrieve one recipe connected to the topic. (Example: African American Literature; soul food recipe or Kate Chopin, The Awakening, Cajun recipe)
- Activity #4: Every student formats his or her recipe using Table Tools from the menu choices.
- Activity #5: Every student puts all recipe information together in a Table, duplicates the recipe card table to fill the page, prints and cuts to exchange recipe cards with other students. Every student uses Excel to double and triple the recipe.
- Procedure:
- Activity #1:
Step 1: Go over the instructions with the students.
Step 2: Indicate using Word and Internet to work on today’s class assignment.
- Activity #2: Every student decides their topic.
- Activity #3:
Step 1: Students use Word Processing to create a page of 6 tables (1 column / 1 row which look like recipe index cards).
Step 2: Every student uses Internet to retrieve one recipe from an appropriate (Cajun, Soul, etc.) website.
- Activity #4:
Step 1: Every student formats their recipe care using different font style and may insert pictures or draw a picture using drawing toolbars.
Step 2: Every student should note the resource of the information.
- Activity #5:
- Step 1: Every student puts the recipe card into a format for printing and exchanging with their classmates. Every student puts the recipe into an Excel worksheet in order to use the power of Excel to double and triple the recipe.
- Sample product of Word recipe card document and Excel document: (see attached word and excel documents). Students will produce the recipe card as well as produce an Excel document showing how they are able to double and triple the recipe using the power of Excel to make their calculations.
- Significance: This class will be implemented after students have learned the features of vocabulary specific to the area of cooking as it relates to the genre and culture of the setting of the literature being read. Integrating technology into reading a novel, poem or short story.
- Self-evaluation of the design for this lesson:
The design of this lesson can help the 9th grade teacher to follow these procedures or activities to implement technology into teaching literature, and in hope of motivating students about the people and places they have read about in order to better enjoy the story by relating what they’ve learned about a culture and setting to an real aspect of their life: cooking + eating!
