Alya Marquardt is a British-Iraqi singer and song-writer who loves Iraqi folk music. When Alya was young, she spent a lot of time with her grandmother. Her grandmother was a member of a women’s music group. They sang Iraqi folk songs at weddings. This is how Alya learned about singing.

Alya lives in Tottenham in London in England. Tottenham is in north London. It has a famous football team called Tottenham Hotspur. The nickname of the team is Spurs. They are in the English Premier League and they play their matches at the White Hart Lane football stadium.

Tottenham is now Alya’s hometown, but she is from Basra in the south of Iraq. Basra has a population of around 1.5 million people. It is a very old city. It is nearly 1,400 years old. It is one of the hottest places in the world. The temperature there in the summer is usually more than 45°C. Basra is a famous city, because some people think it was the home of the great Arab sailor, Sindbad the Sailor.

Alya is the leader of an ensemble, or group, of musicians called the Shamash Ensemble. Their names are Asaf Sirkis, George Crowley, Jasper Hoiby, Olie Brice, Shirley Smart, Nikos Ziarkis and Sam Leak. Asaf is a drummer. George plays the saxophone. Jasper and Ollie are bassists. Shirley plays the cello. Nikos plays the oud and Sam is a pianist. The Shamash Ensemble has a CD of songs called ‘Chai Party’. The album includes songs called ‘Chi Mali Wali’, ‘Foug El Nakhal’ and ‘Hatha Mou Ansaf Minek’. The CD is on the Two Rivers record label.

People who like Alya and the Shamash Ensemble’s music and want to help people in Iraq can download the music using their computer or Smartphone. If they download one song, they must pay £1. If they pay £10, they can download the whole CD. There are 10 songs on the CD. It is possible to listen to two songs online for free.

When people buy the songs from ‘Chai Party’ Alya and the Shamash Ensemble don’t keep the money for themselves. They send the money to Iraq to help people and to pay for Iraqi children’s education.
