GWG Awards Nomination Package

The purpose of the Geospatial Intelligence Standards Working Group (GWG) Awards Program is to create a venue for recognizing personnel for their contributions in helping to achieve the goals and vision of the GWG. Nominated individuals are government (civilian or military) or contract personnel who have supported GWG core or associate member organizations. Their contributions are considered to be highly significant mission accomplishments in the area of geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) standardization activities for the National System for Geospatial Intelligence (NSG). GWG Awards are honorary recognitions only and are therefore non-monetary. Awards will be given in the following two categories:

THE GEOSPATIAL INTELLIGENCE STANDARDS WORKING GROUP (GWG) ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:

This award recognizes professional outstanding achievements in support of the mission of the GWG. The GWG Achievement Award is given to GWG participants and recognizes their contributions to GEOINT standards activities that support the interoperability goals of the NSG. A GWG Achievement Award recipient may be a standards officer in his or her organization, have worked in standards development/standards setting organizations to ensure that NSG community requirements were addressed as standards were developed, have served as a standards subject matter expert, or worked in a senior management/leadership role promoting the policies and procedures related to the adoption and use of GEOINT standards. Outstanding achievements are indicated by a high level of performance and accomplishmentin one or more specific standards projects, as well as demonstrated technical knowledge, leadership capabilities, orsuccess in implementing innovative techniques, all related to GEOINT standards.

THE GEOSPATIAL INTELLIGENCE STANDARDS WORKING GROUP (GWG) FOUNDER’S AWARD:

The GWG Founder’s Award is given to GWG participants and recognizes their career contributions to the standards industry.This award recognizes individuals throughout the NSG community who, like the GWG Founder, Karen Irby, have embracedand fostered the concept of community-consensus by leading efforts to develop and implement community-based GEOINTstandards, standardization processes, and effective standards governance. A GWG Founders Award recipient will have helped GEOINT standards efforts “gain traction” by promoting policies, processes, governance mechanisms or participating in other efforts that support the U.S. federal government’s efforts to foster the use of voluntary, open standards. The precepts for the GWG Founders Award include demonstrated leadership, initiative, integrity, and commitment in promoting standards, tackling standards issues, sharing solutions, and addressing interoperability requirements and strategies that support GEOINTvia community venues.

VOTING SCHEDULE AND PROCESS

A call for nominations for both awards will begin on 1 January each year. The nominating process will close at the end of May. The nominations for both awards will be sent to the GWG Secretariat. The GWG Secretariat will assemble an Awards Committee comprised of five representatives from the GWG core and associate member organizations. The Awards Committee will review the applications and make recommendations to the GWG Chair, who willmake the final selections. Award announcements will be made at the second GWG Plenary session, which is typically held in October.

Nominations:

  • GWG Achievement Award: Nominees are solicited from all GWG participants. Each GWG participant may nominate up to 3 individuals.

GWG Founder’s Award: Nominees are solicited from GWG Core Member organizations. Each Core Member Organization may nominate 1 individual. When more than 1 Founder’s Award nomination is received from a Core Member Organization, the GWG Secretariat will provide the nominations to the Primary Core Member Representative to down select to 1 nomination per Core Member Organization. The nominee does not need to be employed by the submitting core member organization (e.g., JFCOM’s one nomination can be nominating an NSA employee).

Selections:

  • GWG Achievement Award: Nominations are reviewed by the Awards Committee, and their recommendations are sent to the GWG Chair for final selection. No more than 10 nominees will be selected by the Awards committee for submission to the GWG Chair. The GWG Chair will select no more than 5 persons to receive the GWG Achievement Award each year.
  • GWG Founder’s Award: Nominations are reviewed by the Awards Committee, and their recommendations are sent to the GWG Chair for final selection. No more than 5 nominees will be selected by the Awards committee for submission to the GWG Chair. The GWG Chair will select 1person to receive the GWG Founder’s Award each year.

General Rules:

  • Individuals nominated in each award category may be government or contract personnel who have supported GWG Core or Associate member organizations and who meet the award qualifications described above in the GWG Awards Nomination Package.
  • GWG Achievement Award winners are eligible for future GWG Achievement Award nomination and selection
  • Previous GWG Founder’s Award winners are not eligible for future nominations/selection for the GWG Founder’s Award, as this is a once in a lifetime award. (Previous award winners, 2008: Karen Irby, 2009: Dr. Clifford Kottman, 2010: Stephen Kerr)
  • No self nominations will be accepted.
  • The GWG Secretariat selects Core and Associate Member Representatives to serve on the Awards Committee with appointments serving for one awards cycle. The GWG Secretariat prepares the package of nominees to provide to the Awards Committee and facilitates the awards process.
  • The Awards Committee determines the deliberation process to be used and reportstheir recommendations to the GWG Chair for final selection.
  • The GWG Chair announces awards winners at the second GWG Plenary meeting each year (typically in Oct) and through other communication channels deemed appropriate.
