Position: This student trainee position is with the Naval Sea Logistics Center (NSLC) and is established under the Federal Government’s Student Career Experience Program (SCEP). To qualify, students must be: 1) at least 16 years of age;2) a U.S. citizen; 3) attending or accepted for enrollment as a degree seeking student at a college or university; 4) pursuing an Information Technology, Information Science, Computer Science or related technology academic major or field of study; 5) attending college or university on at least a half-time basis (as defined by the college or university; 6) attending or accepted into the Cooperative Education Program, Intern or similar program at the Educational Institution or willing to work fulltime during breaks, holidays and summers when available and part time during the school years;7) maintaining a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) on a scale of 4.0; 8) able to satisfy any security or suitability requirements; and 9) physically able to perform assigned work.

Earn While You Learn: Students earn while they learn. Salary is commensurate with academic credits and is set by the Federal General Salary Schedule. Entry will be at theGS-3grade level,requiring completion of one full academic year of post-high school study. Hourly pay rate is $11.95 per hour. Upon completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an Associates Degree, students become eligible for promotion to the GS-4 level with an hourly pay rate of $13.41 per hour. Upon completion of 3 full academic years of post high school study, students become eligible for promotion to the GS-5 level with an hourly pay rate of $15.00 per hr. Tuition reimbursement is also available based on GPA.

About the Job: Student trainees work directly with project managers, IT Specialists, the technical community, and the customer and sponsor base to provide them the opportunity to apply fundamental IT approaches and methodologies, assist in determining functional and systems requirements and specifications; design and develop applications; and provide customer training and support. Student trainees will be exposed to and develop knowledge, skills, and abilities in the utilization of leading edge technology on industry standard platforms while providing IT solutions to support current and future U.S. Navy life-cycle logistics support requirements. Some IT packages used, JAVA, J2EE, Power Builder, HTML, SQL, PL-SQL and others, working with Sys Admin, DBAs and Information Assurance IT specialist to complete workloads.

Work Schedule: Students may alternate school and work schedules. They must work full time during the summer months and are encouraged to work part time during the academic year if the college or university is within commuting distance of the work site. Flextime schedules are available while working full time.

Conversion: Students are eligible for non-competitive conversion to afull-time permanent, career or career conditional Federal service appointment upon graduation if they are able to complete 640 hours of career-related student trainee work experience at NSLC prior to the graduationdate; meet all other program requirements; and demonstrate satisfactory performance as documented by their supervisor of record.
