Woman (W) : Yes, sir. May I help you?
Man (M) : Well, yes. I mean no. I don’t need any help. I just need for you to issue me a driver’s license. I’m an excellent driver already. I just need the license.
W : Well, I can help you with that. You’ll just need to answer a few questions. And take a driving test.
M : Yeah, yeah, yeah. That’s great. But like I said, I’m already a good driver. I know how to drive perfectly. Just put your foot on the gas and go, go, go, go.
W : Certainly, sir. But if you will just answer a few questions.
M : Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
W : Okay, sir. What do you do when you see a flashing red lights?
M : Well, um, ah, speed up and rush right through the light because it means something is coming and you’ll have to stop and wait. I hate to wait.
W : Well, sir. That’s not quite the right answer. Here. Take this book and go over there and join the other people gathered around the storyteller.
M : I don’t need that!
W : Yes, you do, sir. In just a moment, a storyteller will begin your book, which is titled ‘Little red sports car’. I want you to follow along with the story looking at all of the pictures and words and turn the pages every time you hear this sound. [Dililing doong]. That will help you keep up.
M : I don’t need any help keeping up. I just go, go, go.
W : Of course, sir. Now, when the story is over, come back and I’ll ask you some more questions. You’d better go now. The story is starting.
M : Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. I’m going. I’m going.

M : Ah, yeah, hi. I’m back and I want to thank you. Uh, I really learned a lot.
W : Oh, really? What did you learn?
M : Well, um, I learned that you really have to be careful.
W : Oh, yes. That’s right.
M : Yeah. You have to be careful not to speed around the police officer. You have to speed when there is no one around. In fact…
W : Sir! Sir! I think you missed the point of the story. Let’s try another question. When you come to an intersection, you see a flashing yellow light. What should you do?
M : Um. Let see. You come to a flashing yellow light. Oh, that’s easy! A flashing yellow light means you’re a chicken if you stop, so you don’t. You go faster and make it through the intersection before everyone else does.
W : Yes, sir. Well, do you see that new group of people over there by the storyteller?
M : Oh, I see. I, I see. Read the story again? So I’m not ready yet, huh?
W : No, sir. I don’t think you are. You’ll need to read that book again. This time there will be some music and sound effects added to the story. I want you to follow along with the storyteller and read every word in the book. This time, you are going to start from the title page and that’s the page right inside the front cover and just like the last time, whenever you hear that funny sound, [Dililing doong], like that, it’s your clue to turn the page. Do you understand?
M : Oh, sure I do. Read all of the words, turn the page with the funny sound and go,go,go. You know, this is kind of fun after all. I like stories, especially when it’s about a car.

W : Oh! It’s you! You’re back. Well, did you learn anything?
M : Of course, I did. I learned that little red sports cars are cool. And they have really cool horns. Beep-beep. Zoom-zoom.
W : Well, that’s just fine, sir. But you have to answer some questions correctly.
M : Okay. I’m ready.
W : All right. In your story, Little red sports car, what is the main thing that the Brown Bear did wrong?
M : Okay, okay. I know this one. Umm. Let’s see. I know. I know. The Brown Bear got caught. Ah-ha! You thought you had me on that one, didn’t you?
W : Sir, sir, sir! I, I’m afraid that is not correct. I think you should go back to the book, one last time. You still haven’t learned the lesson of ‘Little red sports car’ and this is absolutely the last time.
M : Okay. Yes, mme. Whatever you say.
W : This time, sir, you are going to participate. Right along with the story, you are going to do some special tasks. Are you ready?
M : Yes. Yes, I am.
W : Turn to page 2 in your book, and I’ll show you what you are going to do. You are going to fill in some missing words in your story. Here’s how it will sound. Brown Bear-beep(sound)-, a brand new sports-beep(sound)-, Beep-beep! Zoom-zoom! Little red sports car. And you will fill in the missing words, but and car. Did you hear that sound? Beep(sound), like that? When you hear it, it means a word has been left out, and you need to fill it in. There will be missing words on every page. Okay?
M : Yeah. Sure. Every time I hear the sound, beep(sound), yeah, that sound, I fill in the missing word.
W : Correct!Now, go on over and start on the title page again. It is your last chance. So pay attention.
M : Okay. Oh, boy. Here we go. I’m ready. Beep-beep! Zoom-zoom! Beep-beep! Zoom-zoom!

W : Yes! Anything else?
M : Well, I learned that you have to pay careful attention when you drive a car.
W : Yes?
M : And I learned that good drivers are safe drivers and you need to obey all traffic laws.
W : Very good, sir. Now, let’s take your driving test.
M : Oh, oh boy! Oh, boy! Beep-beep! Zoom-zoom! Oh, I’m going to be SO careful.

The officer watched as the traffic flowed.

Brown Bear’s car went racing past.
Beep-beep! Zoom-zoom!

The officer said, “He’s going too fast!”

On went the siren. On went the light.

could not use his little red sports car.
But now he always drives with care.
