Fashion Design: Entry Portfolio Review
Entry Portfolio Review Requirements
UNT Fashion Design BFA Program
The portfolio for the entry Portfolio Review must include the following materials:
I. A complete set of transcripts which shows that the student has successfully completed (with a grade of C or better) the art core program [Design I (Art 1440), Design II (Art 1450), Drawing I (Art 1500), Drawing II (Art 1510), and Art Appreciation (Art 1200)]. The "Unofficial" UNT transcript which is provided through the registrar office is the preferred form. The student must highlight these art courses with a hi-lighter marker. All transfer transcripts should be accessible through the registrar. You may participate in this review if you have successfully completed and/or currently enrolled in three of these three of these five core classes provided you will be enrolled in the other two of these courses in the summer in which the review takes place. If accepted into the program, you must bring documentation of successful completion of this class/these classes to the first class meeting in the fall. All students interested must apply through the Entry Portfolio Review in order to be accepted into the program (including transfer students and post-baccalaureate). Be aware that students applying to the Fashion Design program will be evaluated on the ability to be a successful college student academically, as well as artistic/creative capabilities. Evidence of academic success is evaluated through grades/grade point average in all college courses as well as in the art core prerequisites. Evidence of artistic and creative capabilities is evaluated through creative work provided in the Entry Portfolio Review.
II. Five pieces of creative work, which contain the following:
1) Two examples (at least one in color) of two-dimensional design demonstrating the following compositional skills:
a. Figure/ground
b. Compositional structure-asymmetrical balance (this must be demonstrated in at least one of the two pieces)
c. Demonstration of color theory (specifically hue-value-chroma) through pattern
2) Two examples of drawing that demonstrate skills chosen from the following list:
a. Two point perspective
b. Figure drawing (nude figure preferred)
c. Still life
(These works must not be drawn from photography or the student’s imagination.)
3) One Special Assignment: Click on the link below to receive the special assignment, which will be the 5th piece of your portfolio.
· Spring 2009 Special Assignment and form– Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Get the Acrobat Reader from Adobe.
4) Optional 6th piece: An example of three-dimensional (3D) design may be included as a sixth piece in the entry portfolio. The 3D work must be photographed and shown in at least 2 views. Black and white photography should be used unless the piece is color dependent. An 8" x 10" format is required. (No actual 3D work accepted).
NOTE: None of the examples in the portfolio can exceed 15" x 20" in overall size. If necessary, original work may be reduced on a photocopier or photographed in order to comply with the size requirement. All work must be enclosed in one pocket portfolio or envelope with the student’s name on the outside. Additionally, all work must be labeled on the back with a 2” x 4” white label in the upper left-hand corner. On the label, include your name, title of the work, media and which requirement it fulfills, i.e., two point perspective. No framed or matted work will be accepted. Failure to present work according to these guidelines will result in non-passage of the Entry Portfolio Review.
*At the beginning of the Spring 2009 semester Entry Portfolio Review examples will be presented in the display cases on the first floor of Scoular Hall.
III. A postage-paid, self-addressed #10 business envelope for the return of the results of the Entry Review.
NOTE: No Fashion Design faculty or staff member at the University of North Texas will assist a student in pre-screening or selecting the pieces for this portfolio. The student’s selection process will provide evidence of critical, analytical skills. This will be strictly adhered to in order to avoid giving any student an unfair advantage over others who might not have access to the faculty. FAILURE to include all required items (I, II and III above) in your portfolio will result in your elimination from the review.
