Welcome!

Welcome to English 9! Be sure to read all of this!! I am SO excited to teach you for your first year of high school. High school can be overwhelming at first, but don’t worry. It’s going to be an awesome year full of learning, working together, and LOLs…guaranteed!

Classroom Goals:

·  Work collaboratively using the new TN READY strategies.

·  Develop the skills necessary for essay writing and research.

·  Develop the skills necessary for oral communication, grammar, and vocabulary.

·  Read and analyze literature.

We will cover a variety of genres including: short stories, novels, nonfiction, and drama.

Classroom Rules: Be respectful of each person in the room.

Do not talk when I am talking.

Do not pack up before the bell. I will dismiss you NOT the bell.

Classroom Procedures:

·  Be seated at your desk and working on bell work before the bell!

o  Homework is due at the beginning of class…no exceptions!

o  You will get one free tardy each nine weeks.

·  Bring all your books and materials and take them when you leave. (There will be no locker or restroom passes.)

·  Sharpen all pencils before the bell.

·  Follow guidelines established in the CHS handbook.

Consequences:

·  1st offense: Verbal warning

·  2nd offense: Parent contacted

·  3rd offense: Disciplinary referral

·  Extreme instances will proceed directly to an administrator.

Materials (required daily unless otherwise notified):

·  Binder (or 3 folders) for English Loose-leaf paper

·  Blue/black pens Red pens

·  Colored pencils Post-its for text marking

·  Flash drive- low cost fine Regular pencils

·  IMPORTANT: Access to a computer: More info on the next page about typing papers.

·  Our first major text is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, which we will begin reading at the beginning of the 2nd week. The rest of the books may be ordered through the English Department. More information will be given out on this process later.

·  WISH LIST: One or more of the following: Kleenex, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, paper towels

Grading System:

·  Grades are determined on a total points system. Each assignment is weighed based on the level of difficulty and time involved.

·  Formula: Total points earned divided by the total points possible = grade (EX: 40/50 = 80%).

·  Grade Scale - A(93-100), B(85-92), C(76-84), D(70-75), F(69 and below)

·  Make-Up Policy:

·  It is the student’s responsibility to make up any missed work. All handouts, power points, and assignments are located on my webpage. The student should check my webpage for necessary information and print off handouts before returning to class.

·  A student should obtain the phone number of a reliable classmate to call for assignments when he/she is absent.

·  Unexcused absence: 10% penalty on all unexcused late assignments.

·  Excused absence:

Homework: Per CHS policy, students are given the same number of days to complete an assignment as the number of days missed. (2 absent days = 2 days to make up). Assignments that were due during a student’s excused or unexcused absence are due immediately upon his/her return or the assignment is considered late.

Tests/Quizzes: Make up days will be by appointment. Come by, email, or call me and we will work it out. Students may not make up any assignments during school.

ü  Tests and quizzes must be made up within one week of the absence. If it has not been made up within one week of the absence, the grade will automatically be a zero.

ü  If a student is present when I assign a test, but misses a day or 2 between and returns the day of the test, he/she WILL take the test on test day.

ü  If a student fails a test, he/she has the option to retest the following Thursday after school. To retake the test, the student must complete an additional study guide assignment and attend Academic Support before the retest. The maximum score allowed for a “second chance test” is a 70.

ü  Quizzes cannot be retaken.

Absences and Due dates: If a student has an excused absence and an assignment is due on the missed day, the assignments are due on the day he/she returns to school.

Exam Exemption: Subject to Administration approval: Any student with a spring semester average of 90 and no more than three excused absences will be exempt from the spring semester exams.

Late work:
For late work, Mandatory Tutoring will be required from time to time for missing assignments. If needed, your child will be notified and bring a note for you to sign saying you are aware of the situation.
• Student fails to turn in a homework, class work, essay, or project on the assigned due date.
• Student’s work fails to meet standards set forth.
Per CHS policy, any work that is not turned in on time can earn up to 70% after the student completes the assignment in academic support. A student may earn a lower grade on any assignment based on level of effort given to the assignment.

Rewriting Assignments:
Writing assignments will account for the majority of the grades taken during the year. Students have the opportunity, but are not always required, to rewrite graded paragraphs and essays that are written during class. The rewrite must take place by appointment in my classroom after school and turned in before the student leaves. The student may choose whether or not to have a conference/ask questions before rewriting. All rewrites must be accomplished before the last week of the nine weeks to allow enough time for rescoring.

Due dates/Reminders:
To avoid consequences for late work, a student should always go to my webpage to double check due dates and/or reprint any lost handouts.

In addition, I will SOMETIMES send reminders on social media.

Rules for Papers:

All papers must follow a type-written MLA format:

*All papers will be assigned more than one day in advance, so excuses such as no ink, no paper, printer jams, etc. will not get sympathy. The Walgreens on Byhalia is open 24 hours-they sell ink and paper. A student should NOT email the paper or work to me unless instructed to do so. If a computer is unavailable, try Kinko’s, or somewhere similar, to print. The CHS library is open at 6:30 am. I do not accept notes from parents asking for extensions on due dates or emailed work.

Cheating:

Cheating will result in steps in accordance with the school handbook rules. Cheating includes, but may not be limited to, the following actions:

·  Presenting work as your own that you acquired from an outside source--for example, from another student, a book, an internet source, Wikipedia, Cliffs Notes, etc.

·  Presenting work of your own that has previously been evaluated for an assignment in another class.

·  Reporting on a book that you have used for a book report or for class study in another English class.

·  Giving another student your work to copy or “consult.” Copying someone else’s homework answers will result in a disciplinary referral and a zero on the assignment for both students.

·  Using unauthorized assistance during a test or in-class writing assignment; for example, looking at another student’s paper; having helpful information written on one’s hand, the desk, phone, etc.; leaving notes or open books in sight on the floor or under a desk.

*I approve of kindles, nooks, smart phones, Ipads, etc. as a means to read the required texts throughout the year, as long as they are used for school purposes only while they are in the classroom!

In Addition

Please do not open ANY personal hygiene items even if you think they are unscented. I have allergies and these items often irritate my sinuses and/or give me a headache. This will just make me grouchy. I do not want to be grouchy. J I look forward to having many pleasant days together.
