Orthopaedic Curriculum for Students
1. Outline for the month given to the student at the beginning of the rotation
2. Assignments
- 3rd and 4th year students will meet every morning at 6:30 in the residents’ room (academic office) to look over the patient list and to update the labs.
- Students will be assigned to the different services (one student per service).
3. Rotations
- 1 week: Trauma (Dr. Ebraheim)
- 1 week: Sports (Dr. Levine and Dr. Sohn)
- 1 week: Spine and Joints (Dr. Lai/Dr. Elgafy and Dr. Khan)
4. 1 week: Hand and Foot and Ankle (Dr. Skie/Dr. Mustapha)
5. Basic Lectures
- Musculoskeletal Examination (Chief Resident)
- Casting and Splinting/Injection Techniques (Chief Resident)
- Neurological Examination (Dr. Elgafy)
- Open Fractures (Chief Resident)
- Upper Extremity Fractures (Chief Resident)
- Lower Extremity Fractures (Chief Resident)
6. Fracture lecture and handout given by Dr. Ebraheim on Fridays
7. Rotations in the Orthopaedic Department
- Clinic
- Interview process and physical examination
- Hands on Immobilizations and injections or procedures done in clinic
- OR
- 2nd assistant in surgery helping in procedures
- Hands-on basic procedures
- Improve surgical skills (suture techniques)
- Floor
- Assign a patient (1 or 2) a week during particular rotation
- Write notes
- Follow-up and plan
- Dressing changes
- ER
- Follow the resident on call and help him with the on-call duties
8. Conferences
- X-ray conference (every Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:30 am)
- Grand Rounds (once a month)
- Resident lectures (every Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm)
Both conferences are mandatory for 3rd and 4th year students
