Meeting 2885
Guest Speaker: David Harris RC of Onkaparinga - River Relay
Rotary Club of Onkaparinga planned this adventure for 12 months prior to setting off from just below Hume Dam on the River Murray and travelled to the Murray mouth at Goolwa.
They group set off in 2 “Tinnies” with canopies, on their adventure. They encountered numerous challenges on their journey, some being the low water level and having to row the boats, hitting fallen trees in the river also in the low water.
They travelled through 15 locks and several of the locks created more challenges due to water levels in the upper part of the River Murray.
They travelled for 5 days then took a day off travelling.
Their support team was always there to help and to have their camp sites set up each evening. They enjoyed lots of fellowship and fun along the way. They shared a Rotary meeting with several Rotary Clubs along the way and raised funds through selling stubby holders to many people along the way.
They took a short detour and travelled up the Wentworth/Darling rivers for the experience. Another boat joined the group along the way.
Once inSouth Australia travelling became easier as the water levels were better. The scenery along the Murray changes regularly and of course the sunsets and sunrises are spectacular.
The final challenge was crossing Lake Alexandrina, and they were very pleased once this section was completed.
A wonderful experience, raising $22,000 for Polio Plus and of course with Bill Gates 2:1 a total of $66,000.
The trip took 4 weeks and a challenge successfully completed.
“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”
―Eleanor Roosevelt
