Why We’re Here: This course provides students with an introduction to the skills and knowledge involved in careers related to the health and human services industry.
Important: A mature attitude is required and expected in this course. RESPECT for the feelings and values of others will maintain a climate of trust and comfort for all students. We will uphold this atmosphere on a daily basis as we communicate with each other throughout the course.

Late Work Policy:
· If you have a valid reason for why an assignment must be late - which I approve of - you must take the time to see me about it, before the due date and fill out the appropriate “Extension Request Form.”
· Email, disc, CD, and hand written are all options for the broken/out of ink printer or any other possible assignment malfunction(s).
Remember…
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to catch up on any missed work.
“I was not here” is NOT an excuse for missed work!
Attendance and Lates:
· Being late shows a lack of respect for the class, you, and me. Be sure to be in the room before the second bell rings. If you are not in the room when the second bell rings, you will be marked late.
Brief Overview of Core Course Components:
Volunteer Project and Journal (value 15% of term): Over the term students are required to complete 15 hours of community volunteer work either for an individual or community group. This is a major term project and students will summarize their experiences in a journal portfolio and class presentations.
Weekly Journal: Each week students will spend 20 minutes of in-class time crafting a written response to the week’s activities, a posted question, or readings. This is your chance to ask questions, make critical observations, or discuss your personal reactions to a topic.
Special Topic Report and Presentation: As a part of the major projects section, students will choose and research a topic during class time. To present their learning to the teacher and their classmates, students will submit a written report and prepare an oral presentation with PowerPoint and a brochure or handout. In class time will be provided for research and preparation.

(10-15 hours) / 1. Students will be expected to identify the personal traits relevant to the helping careers associated with the Health and Human Services field.
2. Students will be expected to identify the relationship between personal wellness and the determinants of community health.

(20-25 hours) / 1. Students will be expected to understand the value of volunteers in our communities

A Systems Approach
(20 hours) / 1. Students will be expected to demonstrate an awareness of the social and health care systems and how to access the services they provide
Module 4: Career Connections & Pathways
(15-20 hours) / 1. Students will be expected to identify career opportunities in the health and human services field.
Module 5: Personal and Professional Skills of Helpers
(30-40 hours) / 1. Students will be expected to understand the need for caregivers to maintain personal and professional skills.
