COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

DEATH AND DYING:

(By the end of this course the student will be able to)

1.  To provide students an opportunity for introspection…how do they feel about issues,

concepts and emotions associated with the process of dying?

2.  To explore grief from a theoretical and a practical basis.

3.  To examine the concept, use and varieties of advanced directives.

4.  To provide examples and strategies students can use to cope with personal and patient loss.

5.  To define the role of hospice in health care today.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION AND ABUSE:

(By the end of this course the student will be able to:)

1.  Understand the basic physiologic process of addiction.

2.  Know how to interview and assess a patient to determine if substance abuse or addiction is present.

3.  Be able to cite the many medical co-morbidities that present in a primary care practice that may suggest substance abuse or addiction.

4.  Describe a treatment model that can be used in primary care.

5.  Recognize their professional and ethical responsibility regarding substance abuse.
