ENG 3 Course Expectations

Class Objectives: To prepare students for ENG IV reading/analyzing/comprehension and meet graduation requirements.
To prepare students for the SAT and EOC
To engage in writing and projects using critical, creative, and research objectives using American literature as a backdrop.
Supply List:
1. One ½-inch 3-ring binder/folder for journals, notes, returned work.
2. Pencils, pens.
3. Loose leaf paper.
4. School-issued laptop
5. One box of tissue & one bottle of hand sanitizer for student use.
Assignments & Grading Policy:
Daily Grades = 50%
Tests = 30%
Final Exam = 20%
Daily grades will be issued for active class participation. Active engagement is defined as speaking constructively in class discussions, reading in given time spans, writing in given time limits, and not doing: work for another subject, sleeping, applying makeup, lining up at the door, and inappropriate tech use.
Do not ask for extra credit/alternative assignments. Extra credit will be given for exceeding expectations. Extra credit is a reward for being exceptional and demonstrating growth, it is not a crutch for poor work habits.
Late Work Policy: Any assignment, daily or test, will be given a “70” max if 1-4 days late. Five or more days results in a 50.
Tutoring & Make Up Work: Alternative assignments will be plugged in for zeros, missing grades, or piggybacked on other grades (a 100 becomes a 200). Tutoring will consist of written assignments such as essays, short answers or one pagers from a mini-lesson.
The instructor reserves the right to issue written make up work in lieu of regular assignment upon running out of copies or returning old work.
Students who fall behind or can’t master objectives are expected to come to and work in tutoring. Also, this isn’t Domino’s, meaning there are no make up assignments “to-go.”
RULES:
1. Be on time, remain seated.
2. Be respectful to others.
3. Keep food, drinks out of sight. Phones, laptops, personal tech is not to be seen without instructor approval/monitoring.
4. Have all assigned materials: pencils, paper, books, tech, papers.
5. Follow directions, stay on task.
Consequences:
- Verbal Warning
- Parent Contact (phone call, personal meeting)
- Referral/ admin meeting
- SEVERE CLAUSE-- Removal from classroom.
Rewards:
- Verbal praise
- Positive calls, e-mails sent home.
- Class incentives: extra credit.
Attendance: As per SISD policy, exceeding nine absences every 18 weeks results in loss of credit.
Parent and/or admin contact will be made upon frequent absences and if absences result in a decline in academic performance. (3)
If you are absent due to medical reasons, sports, school activities, etc. it is your responsibility to see the instructor or another student to catch up on missed work/lessons after class.
Tardies:Lessons begin right at the bell. Parent and administrator contact will be made upon frequent tardies and if lateness interferes with student learning and progress.
Restroom Policy: Only one student out at a time. Breaks over ten mins. = truancy. You need an I.D. for a pass. Bathroom breaks will not be given if abused (being out too long or buying food) or with administrators’ orders.
Academic Dishonesty—Plagiarism, copying, cheating:
Plagiarism is defined as copying another person’s work and claiming it as your own. If you are caught copying another’s work (student, instructor, professional writer, cheating sites, etc.) the assignment will be given a ZERO. You have ONE chance to re-do the assignment PENDING a teacher conference. Highest grade will be a “50.”
Copying/cheating is defined as using another student’s work to complete your own such as taking photos or multiple choice tests and texting or posting answers on social media for others to use, simply glancing at someone’s paper for answers, and spoon-feeding (enabling others to not read/participate by giving them answers for payment or for free).
You have ONE chance to re-do the assignment PENDING a teacher conference. Highest grade will be a 50.
