Course Description:

English 5-6 continues the study of structural elements of fiction and nonfiction through the analysis of literary periods and their subsequent social values. The literature of the United States and the Americas is emphasized. The six traits of writing are refined in the context of analytical and persuasive writing. Students engage in self-evaluation and respond to audience feedback on their speaking and listening skills. Media forms are examined for their impact on all aspects of society.

Materials and Supplies:

Our two textbooks are the Write Source: Skills Book and the McDougal LittellAmerican Literature book. Students will need a 3-ring binder and a folder, which they are expected to bring to class every day. Come prepared with your pen/pencil, highlighter and college ruled lined paper. A 3-ring binder pouch is useful to store pens, pencils and highlighters.

Attendance:

North High believes that for students to pass the AIMs and to graduate that “all students must be on time and attend all of their classes.” North High Students who have been absent more than 10% of the class periods in one subject (12 or more absences) are at risk of not passing the class according to District Attendance Policy and “Teacher’s Plan for Student Success” and will be placed on “Attendance Academic Probation.” Parents and students are responsible for contacting the school regarding placement on “Attendance Academic Probation” in order to develop a plan with Administration and the teacher to avoid failing the class. North High will provide attendance interventions and notification letters regarding student’s attendance.

Tardy Policy:

All students are expected to be in the classroom when the tardy bell rings and in accordance with the teacher’s Plan for Student Success. Students who are not in class by the tardy bell are subject to attend detention.
