Create your own New Deal Program

Description: You will work in small groups to create an original New Deal program. You will design a program that addresses one of the problems facing the nation during the Great Depression. You may borrow ideas from actual New Deal programs but your final result must be an original creation.

You (the brain trust) will then present your program to FDR (Mr. Kieffer) in the form of a flyer/poster/brochure/power-point/or some other creative wonderful idea approved by Mr. Kieffer. You must also hand in a four paragraph, detailed description of your program.

First things first: Come up with your program

1.  Pick a problem to address (unemployment, loans, banking system, food relief…)

2.  Create a name for your program

3.  How will your program address the problem?

i.  Who will you help and how will you help them?

ii.  Will your program be long lasting (social security) or temporary (CCC)?

iii.  How will you evaluate your program?

On to the final product: You must have the following items completed by the beginning of class: ______

1. A four paragraph, typed description of your program (40 points)

·  1st paragraph: What problem are you addressing?

o  Include relevant statistics and information about the problem itself.

§  Make sure to cite where you got this information from on your work cited page.

o  Why do you think this is something that should be addressed?

·  2nd Paragraph: Exactly who is your program going to help?

o  Are you focusing on a specific age group or gender?

·  Why? Include specific information about how this population is affected by the problem.

§  What area of the country will your program aid the most?

·  Why? Include specific information about how this region is affected by the problem.

·  3rd Paragraph: Exactly what is this program going to do?

o  Include specifics!

§  Example: If you are giving money to families to help them buy food, you want to include how much each family receives and what you are basing this amount on.

·  4th paragraph: Will your program be temporary or long lasting? How will you know if your program is achieving its goal?

o  If it is temporary, how will you know when to end it? What goals do you need to achieve before the program is terminated? How will you know those goals are met?

o  If it is permanent, how will you know that your goals are being achieved? Who is in charge of altering those goals as time progresses?

§  One free website (No Wikipedia)

§  E-books or good old fashioned paper books (yes kids they still exist)
