Better Research Through Engagement, Implementation,

and Knowledge Translation

Academic Research Symposium 2017

Whistler, BC on Saturday, June 2, 2017 @ 12:00 – 16:00

Terms of Reference

There will be three panels as described below, each comprised of approximately six to eight members. The members will be selected from among the CAEP Academic Executive Members, the three AS Committees, as well as others from across Canada. Each panel will be responsible for:

a) Researching their topic including environmental scans of Canada and U.S., literature review, and interviews of experts.

b) Creating recommendations for Canadian Academic EM units,

c) Presenting the recommendations at the annual CAEP Academic Symposium,

d) Publishing the recommendations in CJEM.

Authorship

Each panel will publish an article in CJEM with their recommendations. Authorship should be determined by each panel up front, but it is proposed that the Symposium Chair (Jeff Perry), all three panel leads (TBD), and CAEP Research Manager (Jennifer Artz) be co-authors on all, as they will be involved in the planning, development, and delivery of the panels.

Panel 1: How to engage the patient & public in EM research and implementation

Lead: Patrick Archambault

Confirmed Panelists: Carolyn Snider,Christian Vaillancourt

Academic Section Representatives: Ian Stiell, Jeff Perry

Goals: To make pragmatic recommendations on the best practices, facilitators, and barriers for the engagement of patients and the public in emergency medicine research studies. Conducting patient-centred studies is the new reality for clinical research. Specifically this panel will develop recommendations to: (1) improve and standardize patient engagement capacity and (2) advance the implementation of research findings (e.g., shared decision making).

Panel 2: How to engage physicians in EM research and conduct implementation trials

Leads: Andrew McRae, Ian Stiell

Confirmed Panelists: Marcel Emond, Corinne Hohl, Monica Taljaard, Janet Curran, Jamie Brehaut

Academic Section Representatives: Ian Stiell, Jeff Perry

Goals:

1) To make recommendations for engaging physicians to facilitate primary research studies in the ED. These may include prospective data collection and clinical trials, among other study designs. The panel will review different strategies to encourage physicians to participate in timely and accurate data collection.

2) To make recommendations for the optimal conduct of implementation studies in the ED. Such studies generally involve changes in behaviour by clinicians such as ordering imaging, performing CPR, and removal of cervical spine immobilization. Implementation studies seek to demonstrate the actual impact on patient outcomes for new processes of care. The panel will review different study designs as well methods for ensuring optimal compliance among participating physicians, nurses, and paramedics.

Panel 3: How to ensure your research findings impact care through successful knowledge translation

Lead: Laurie Morrison, Kerstin de Wit

Confirmed Panelists: Eddy Lang, Brent Thoma

Academic Section Representatives: Ian Stiell, Jeff Perry

Goals: To make recommendations about how to disseminate research findings and engage clinicians/patients to improve patient care. Knowledge Translation is defined by CIHR as a dynamic and iterative process that includes synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically-sound application of knowledge to improve the health of Canadians, provide more effective health services and products and strengthen the health care system. Approaches range from traditional conferences and guidelines to newer use of social media and smartphone apps.
