1.Introduction

1.0Purpose

The purpose of this document is to communicate the features and requirements of the release of I20 capable hardware and software for the Nucleus® Paging Transmitter (or Nucleus®). An additional expectation is for Motorola to communicate the degree of interoperability between the Nucleus transmitter and the Glenayre C2000 family of controllers. By receiving candid feedback from our customers, we can ensure that Motorola will bring to the market, in a timely manner, the most desirable features of the I20 interface.

1.1Overview of I20

The I20 interface is defined by a collection of parameter settings and status polling commands that originally was defined by European supplier(s) of base station and control equipment. Adding the ability for the Nucleus® Transmitter to directly communicate with Glenayre C2000 family of controllers allows our customers the freedom of choice when selecting a transmitter to operate in their system. By utilizing the I20 interface protocol, the Nucleus will be able to receive and understand paging data, parameter setting, alarm, and software download information from Glenayre’s C2000 family of controllers without additional interface hardware. Glenayre has extended the I20 protocol to incorporate additional functional commands. Glenayre’s Extended I20 Exciter Interface Protocol is named WMtxp. Motorola’s Nucleus 300 watt, 900 MHz transmitter interoperates with the Glenayre C2000 family of controllers using WMtxp. It is our desire that our customers recognize this flexibility in choice, and consequently take advantage of Nucleus benefits such as reliability, affordability, and migratability.

1.2Implementation of the Motorola I20 Interface

It is Motorola’s intention to offer an I20 interface to Glenayre’s C2000 family of base station controllers that will allow the Nucleus® to operate normally within an I20 paging system. Normal operation consists of the ability to:

•Transmit POCSAG, FLEX™, and GOLAY paging traffic seamlessly (on-the-fly)

-All data rates of POCSAG (512, 1200, 2400 bps), FLEX™ (1600, 3200, 6400 bps), and GOLAY (300/600 bps)

-For POCSAG, all derivatives that follow the same modulation schemes and speeds of standard POCSAG will be supported

•Transmit ReFLEX25 paging traffic for 1600, 3200 and 6400 bps. (Deviation for ReFLEX is +2400, +800, -800, -2400 Hz)

• Send to the controller the operational status of the Nucleus®

•Send to the controller the alarm status of the Nucleus®

•Remotely set operating parameters of the Nucleus® via the base station controller

•Remotely download software to the station through the base station controller (See Section 2.2.2 for further details on software download capability.)

•Support both I20/WMtxp and SyLC base station controller interfaces

•Operate within a system consisting of I20 compliant controllers and Motorola transmitters with no degradation from today’s simulcast performance (i.e., launch times, deviation, frequency error)

2.I20/WMtxp Features Rollout

2.1Software Release 4.10

WMtxp is a new protocol for interoperability between the Glenayre C2000 family of controllers and Motorola’s 300 watt, 900 MHz Nucleus transmitter with the I20 option. The C2000 family of controllers provides configuration choices for the I20 (WMtxp) Transmitter Type. The choices are Basic Mode, Glenayre (Extended) Mode or none. For I20/WMtxp, either Basic or Glenayre (Extended) Mode must be selected, and both support ReFLEX25. When Basic Mode is enabled, the following commands are supported:

2.1.1 Basic Command Set

For Glenayre C20XX Base Station Controllers

FeatureCommand Description

C.1.1CCSet Transmitter Channel Number

(Up to 16 channels)

C.1.2CPSet Transmitter Output Power Setpoint[2]

(Up to 250W)

C.1.3CASet Max Output Power Alarm Threshold

(The Nucleus station recognizes this alarm but

doesn’t require it since maximum alarm settings

are factory set. The Nucleus responds to the

GL C20XX controller with the power setting from CP, above.)

C.1.4COChange High Speed Frequency Offset

in 2 Hz Increments (up to +/- 510 Hz)

C.1.5CBSet Low Forward Power Alarm Point #1

C.1.6CESet High Reflected Power Alarm Point #1

C.1.7CFSet High Reflected Power Alarm Point #2

(The Nucleus station doesn’t have 2 High Reflected Power settings. To comply with I20/WMtxp protocol, the Nucleus responds to the GL C20XX controller with the power setting from CP, above.)

C.1.8 DSGet Status

(Tx online, alarm active indication)

C.1.9DFGet Full Status

(Power levels, Tx channel, high speed offset)

C.1.10DTReport State of All Alarms (see Phase 1 Alarms)

C.1.11CDSet Default Values for Redundant

commands C.1.1, C.1.2, C.1.5, C.1.6, C.1.4

2.1.2 Commands

When Glenayre (Extended or WMtxp) Mode is enabled, the following commands are supported:

This phase includes a set of commands that allow for the standard operation of remote software download.

Glenayre Extended (WMtxp) Command Set

FeatureCommand Description

C.2.1GLRequest extended mode

C.2.2GXExit GL extended mode

C.2.3GLQBrief status query

C.2.4GLSFull status

C.2.7GLNGet channel status

C.2.8GLVGet version information

C.2.9GLDExciter download data

(send S-records)

C.2.10XOSet Transmitter Offset Frequency (10 Hz steps)

(Low speed paging only)

C.2.11XNSet Transmitter Offset Frequency (1 Hz steps)

(High speed paging only)

2.2Remote Software Download from Glenayre C20XX Base Station Controllers

Any new software will automatically be switched to an active state upon successful completion of remote software download. Manual switchover is a standard feature and operational on the Nucleus SCM between the dual banks of flash PROMs.

An aborted software download will cause the station to reset and revert to the previous version of stored code.

The software download feature is only available with the Glenayre (Extended) Mode. Channel mapped power parameter settings and ReFLEX frequency offset settings are also part of the Extended Mode.

2.3 External Reference Selection: Front Panel Programming

The external reference frequency will be selectable through the front panel. 1MHz, 5MHz and 10 MHz will be selectable. However, 10MHz is the standard for the C2000 family of controllers.

The external key will automatically be configured HIGH when selecting I20 operation (per the protocol). The external key will automatically be configured LOW when selecting SyLC.
