The week of November 28th, 2011

Happy Monday!

I hope that you and your family had a nice Thanksgiving break together and that your little one was able to rest up! Thank you so much for helping your child with their Turkey Tom artwork last week. They were spectacular! The kids LOVED showing off their work. Here’s a quick peak into our week together…

Specialist change this week… Starting today, our class will have science with Sue!

Phonics: We will learn about the “H Brothers” also known as the diagraphs sh, th, ch, wh. We will work with these diagraphs for the next two weeks. They are some of the most commonly used diagraphs in our written language, so please spend some time working with your child on these.

Reader’s Workshop: In workshop this week, we will learn how to build our vocabulary and concept knowledge. At this stage in reading, your child is constantly encountering new words that they don’t know how to read. By using the words that they know on the page and other contextual clues in their book, your child will figure out these new words and connect them to what they are reading. We will learn that the cover and title, pictures, our own background knowledge, the pattern of the book, and our ability to sound out words can all help us figure out new words. Our Snap Words this week are can and into.

Writer’s Workshop: Last week in Reader’s Workshop, we learned about two little girls who get into an argument over their snow boots. In Writer’s Workshop we will use this book as inspiration for a new story we will create this week. We will write a “small moment” story about a time that we got into an argument and how we resolved it. We will work especially hard on our spacing, letter formation, and attention to detail in our pieces.

Math Workshop: Our past two weeks have been so busy that we didn’t finish all of the pattern work that I would have liked to! Therefore, we will finish up our pattern work and assessments this week!

Words Their Way: Starting this week, your child will participate in a spelling group that is at their level based on an assessment they completed a few weeks ago. Every week, your child will participate in a small group lesson based on an idea, specific letter, diagraph or word blend. Throughout the week, your child will work with their spelling words at school NOT at home. After several learning activities, they will complete a mini-assessment on their spelling words. Your child will bring home their spelling assessment on Thursdays in their Roundtrip Folder. I am mainly looking for your child to spell the beginning of the word correctly or whatever part of the word they are learning about. I am not looking for 100% of the word to be spelled correctly, although I’m happy when I see it! Any questions, please feel free to contact me! Thanks!

Take care,
