Communicate To Work - Part 1 of 2

Communicate to Work Strand, including: AAC Training, Consultation & Mentoring, as well as ApplyingAAC toEnhance independence and Employability. In this 2-part strand, this team of presenters discusses communication assistance for enhanced independence, describing Assistive Technology (AT) trends and categories, with concentration on Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC). Presenters highlight: high/mid/low tech means to more language development and independence; the significance of support networks in furthering communication and employment; and the need for raising awareness of employment service providers and service consumers about technologies that are helpful and obtainable. Participants learn about the Communicate To Work project that has offered AAC training, consultation and mentoring opportunities in this region.

AT at Work - Modification, Computer Adaptation, Voice Recognition. This speaker has provided the job accommodation and customization componentfor the ‘Communicate to Work’ project, as a presenter in the CTW Training Series and as a consultant for individual consumers in the community. He is a Rehabilitation Engineer and certified Assistive Technology Provider (ATP) with 25 years of experience. Today he will share examples of assistive technology at work, through modifications on the job, computer adaptations, Voice Recognition and more.

Assistive Technology Toolkit - part 1 of 2. Creating an Assistive Tech Toolkit to Support Learning. The SEEDS Project Workgroup on Early Education Technology (SWEET) designed an activity-based assistive technology toolkit available for downloading from the SEEDS Project ( Participants will explore some of the AT tools that enhance early literacy and communication.

“Walk the Walk” and “Talk the Talk” - ‘Communicate To Work’ Mentors

These three AAC Mentors present what it is like to use a communication device to speak. Further, they tell their recent experience in helping others do so! In acting as role models and directly as peer mentors to others who are using or considering a communication device, they walk the walk and “talk the talk” and support others to talk as well. They will also spend time answering questions in this session.
