“My Five Years,” a five year diary from January 1, 1932 to December 31, 1937, of Lulita Crawford Pritchett of Denver, Colorado.

Background: Original is leather bound booklet 3 3/4 “ by 4 1/2” by 5/8.” Each page is a different date of the year, with a “memorandum” page between months, and six at the end. Each page has 20 lines divided into 5 years (four lines per year) by purple horizontal lines. Most entries are in black or blue ink, though some are in pencil. The diary has been in the possession of John Crawford of Olympia, Washington since Lulita’s death.

Sat 1933 Banks closed all over U.S. by Roosevelt’s order. P.M. to dentist. Bill $19. To Lieser’s. Saw Salome’s rag rugs & quilts. Big earthquake in Los Angeles. Worried about Jim & Leola.

Wed 1933 Papa’ 70th birthday. Sunny A.M. Cloudy P.M. Drove to Longmont P.M., visited with Cous. Mamie Ellen, etc. Evening MEP & I to sales class. Muriel took us & brot us home. Gave Papa green & white striped tie & 2 pr. gray socks, cookies, slippers. Unc. John phoned. Jim o.k. Not sure about Leola.

JUNE 16

Fri 1933 Wrote. Finish in yard. Salome called P.M. Granada in evening to see Lee Tracy in “Clear the Wire” & Tom Keene in “Cheyenne Kid.” Letter from Jim. To be married soon.

Fri 1933 Worked on revising western. P.M. cut out & started green house dress. MEP & mother to town. Bot Jim ½ doz silver teaspoons for wedding gift.

JUNE 28

Wed 1933 Left Denver 6:10 A.M. Lunch on Rabbit Ears at 1. Steamboat at 5 P.M. Stopped on Berthoud to get snow lilies. Grand River – flags & shooting stars. Rabbit Ears – turks caps, yellow violets, bluebells, columbines.

JULY 3

Mon 1933 Washed. (New machine) M. ironed. Jim & Peach came on Honeymoon fr. Salt Lake. Big supper for them. Aunt Mary & Elmer called. Pkg. Fr. Aunt Sadie. 2 bks, stockings & soap. Papa arrived in Denver from Wash. D.C.

JULY 4

Tues 1933 Drove to parade at 11 A.M. P.M. to races. Hot! Uncle John, Jim & Peach to chicken supper. Watched fire works from porch. Irene Anderson & children called P.M.

JULY 5

Wed 1933 Plotted. P.M. Gdma to Aunt Mary’s & to supper & church. Rest of us fishing up Gunn Creek. (17) Jim & Peach fishing up Soda Creek (18). Called here evening.

JULY 8

Sat 1933 Leola, Mr. McClaren, Frances Gwikin & Unc. Logan rode all over county. Washed car. Bath P.M. Showers. Peach & Jim up Big Creek fishing. Letter fr. Papa fr. home. New toilet in. Folks to swim & hear band & picture show. Iron water.

Sun 1933 Frances & Mack left for Rifle. Unc. John, Jim & Peach to Red Park. Brot home 56 fish. MEP to S.S. Unc. Log, Leola, Mother, & I to Methodist church. New minister – Benjamin H. Christner. P.M. visited Laura Monson & Trixie & Lilian Kernalian. Supper (waffles) at Aunt Mary’s.

JULY 10

Mon 1933 Washed & ironed. Supper with Arbuckle Club at See’s. Took cherries & angel food cake. Music. Initiated Peach, Leola & Max Wrench. Late getting home. Shower.

Fri 1933 Leola & Unc Log. with Butlers to Craig. Boggs, Columbine. Laura Monson to lunch. Cushie to visit. Also Aunt Mary. Practiced music for 50th anniv. of Sunday Sch. At Church in evening. Jim & Peach home from lake. Brot trout.

Sat 1933 Took top to organ to church. Cleaned & polished it. MEP & I practiced “Adoration.” Peach & Jim to fried chicken supper. Leola & Rex & Max & Unc. Logan to town to “bum around.”

JULY 16

Sun 1933 50th Anniv. of founding of Sunday School in Steamboat. Service at M.E. church. Mother played organ. Mother gave acct. of first S.S. & read from 1883 diary. Grandma, Alice Baer, Elmer Brooks, Mary McClelland, Cushie Groesbeck, Uncle Logan spoke. Margaret & I played “Adoration.” Visited Uncle John P.M. Jim & Peach left A.M. for Calif. by North Park.

DECEMBER 15

Fri 1933 Wrote. Man to measure for new shades for bay window. Mother tinted cards. M working on rug for mother. Mailed Jim’s pkg. We sent chokecherry jam.
